Moroccan rapper jailed over video

(AFP) – 44 minutes ago

CASABLANCA, Morocco — A Moroccan court on Friday sentenced one of the country’s most famous rappers to one year in prison over a video critical of the police, judicial officials told AFP.

Mouad Belghouat, 24, is known for his criticism of King Mohammed VI and was arrested on March 28 by plainclothes officers.

His Casablanca trial was delayed several times before Friday’s verdict, which his lawyer Omar Bendjelloun called “severe”.

He said he would appeal what he called “a trial against the freedom of expression” and a sentence that also included a 90-euro fine.

The charge against Belghouat stems from a YouTube video of one of his songs, which includes images of Moroccan police officers.

New York-based rights group Human Rights Watch said last month Belghouat “denies any link with this video, saying unknown people made the montage of photos and music using a separate recording of the rapper performing the song ‘The Dogs of the State’.”

The song is one of the most famous of the February 20 protest movement that is calling for far-reaching political reforms and anti-corruption measures in the north African monarchy.

Belghouat, nicknamed “Al-Haqed” (‘the Vengeful One’ in Arabic), performs songs critical of the monarchy that deal with themes of injustice and inequality.

One of the most famous songs openly criticises the king and his fortune.

Mohammed VI offered significant reforms curbing his near absolute powers in a bid to preempt the Arab Spring protests that last year felled leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, but still faces calls for deeper reforms.

During the last hearing before the verdict, the court had ordered a supporter of the rapper, Maria Karim, to be arrested and remanded in custody for “insulting” the police attorney.

The court decision led to the defence to withdraw.

“Because of the withdrawal, the defence lawyer’s final arguments could not be registered and the judge did not take this into account in his ruling,” said Bendjelloun.

Attila The Stockbroker on his poetry

This poetry/music video from Britain is called Attila the StockbrokerLibyan Students From Hell.

From daily The Morning Star in Britain, by poet Attila The Stockbroker:

Friday 11 May 2012

Next Wednesday I’m starting a huge tour with my mate Rory Ellis from Australia, a big, gravel-voiced storytelling bluesman, ex-boxer and bouncer and the absolute antidote to Neighbours with his true life tales from the streets of Melbourne.

If you live in England or Wales the chances are we’ll be playing somewhere near you. If you’re in Scotland, sorry – hopefully next time.

This tour, as always, features me writing about what happens in the world and what happens to me. I’ve earned my living as a poet for 32 years, done more than 2,700 gigs in 24 countries and, even in the darkest days of Thatcherism, I didn’t have the kind of material I have now.

You can sum it all up with the chorus from one of my newest songs Looters which uses that infamous quote from Thatcher which becomes more apposite every day: “There’s no such thing as society, so steal and cheat and loot/Just one thing to remember: Make sure you wear a suit!”

Poor kids from Tottenham get sent to jail for nicking a pair of shoes while greedy City types walk away with millions, flaunt it in our faces, and we bail out the banks. There’s naked class rule on behalf of the super-rich and the multinational corporations, fronted by a bunch of Tories from the Bullingdon Club with Rupert Murdoch as their Minister of Propaganda.

You couldn’t make it up. But we’ve had enough. To quote from another of my songs: “It’s time to grab the Goldmen by their Sachs!”

There’s lots of politics and anger in what I do but there’s lots of fun as well, a celebration of life.

For me social justice means more happiness for all, more fun for all, the chance for everyone to fulfil their potential. So I try to make people roar with laughter as well as seethe with anger. And, yes, some of my stuff is very rude.

But above all I am trying to rehabilitate poetry, a word which has such a strange reputation among so many people as though it’s something from another planet which doesn’t concern them.

When I tell people that I earn my living as a poet they often react with disbelief, as though such a thing is impossible in 21st-century Britain. Sometimes people say: “You don’t look like a poet,” expecting me to have a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches rather than a leather jacket and DMs.

I can understand this attitude to a very large degree. The poetry promoted by the literary establishment is for the most part completely irrelevant to people’s lives.

My favourite quote on the subject is Adrian Mitchell‘s famous dictum that “Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores most people” and I have spent the last 30 years trying to do the opposite of that.

It’s always been important to me to take poetry to places it doesn’t normally go. I love being poet in residence at my beloved Brighton & Hove Albion FC. My epic poem Goldstone Ghosts – about my 46 years as an Albion fan and our battle as fans to save our club from greedy moneymen – adorns the wall in our new supporters’ bar and that means a lot to me.

So too do the many times people have come up to me saying: “I’ve always thought poetry was shit but I really like this one!” To use a football analogy – a lot of the poets who are praised in the literary world seem to me to spend their days weaving pretty patterns in the centre circle.

I just want to get the ball, charge upfield and smash it into the back of the net. I’m not interested in poems about daffodils and if I ever mention cherry blossom, you can rest assured I’ll be talking about boot polish.

I write about reality, all kinds of reality, reality as it seems to me. My lovely Mum battled Alzheimer’s for six years and my wife Robina and I looked after her to the end – she died in June 2010. As her memory faded I decided to write a poem telling the story of her life, to help her remember who she was, from a council-house upbringing in Gravesend to Bletchley Park during the war to singing Elgar at the Royal Festival Hall to going on tour with her punk poet son in Australia and Canada.

It has struck a chord with a lot of people and in pamphlet form, I’m happy to say, has so far raised over £1,500 for the Alzheimer’s Society. And it was on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on Mother’s Day. That meant a lot to me.

Hope you’ll come and see us.

Dutch sea eaglets born

This video is about the first Dutch sea eagle nest in the Oostvaarderplassen nature reserve, five years ago. Probably the baby eagle in this video is now, five years later, the mother of the new Roggebotzand nest.

Translated from daily Trouw in the Netherlands:

Instant success for nesting white-tailed eagles

11/05/12, 14:18 – Source: ANP

A sea eagle couple, which this year attempted for the first time to breed in the Roggebotzand nature reserve between Dronten and Kampen, has had immediate success. Ranger Egbert of Wijhe today announced that two eaglets are in the nest.

The successful breeding attempt is special because white-tailed eagles are very rare. In the Netherlands only a handful of these big birds nest. Van Wijhe says that apart from this case they live only in the Oostvaardersplassen, the Biesbosch and the Lauwersmeer. The female of the successful young couple was the first eaglet born in the Oostvaardersplassen

where the first eagle nest of the Netherlands was, after an absence of centuries

The newborn eagles are estimated to be two weeks old and will fly for the first time in about a month’s time. Then they’ll stay for at least another six months with their parents.

The male eagle of this couple was born in the Danish-German border area.

May 2012. Nesting White-tailed Eagles have been confirmed on a small island on Lough Derg, near Mountshannon in County Clare, which marks the first documented evidence of breeding since the species became extinct from Ireland over 100 years ago: here.

Shoe thrown at Breivik

Not only Iraqi journalists throw shoes at individuals accused of mass killing … in a trial where Breivik groupies threaten the life of an Iraqi refugee, a witness to Breivik’s mass murder

From AFP news agency:

Shoe hurled at Breivik at trial

2012-05-11 13:01

Oslo – A family member of one of the victims of Norwegian killer Anders Behring Breivik threw a shoe at him in court on Friday, screaming “you killer, go to Hell!”

The shoe attack, which came as a coroner presented more autopsy reports on the mostly-young victims of the July massacre at Utoya Island was followed by applause, “bravos” and tears among onlookers in the courtroom, and led to a temporary suspension of proceedings on the 17th day of the trial.

The black shoe did not hit Breivik but landed on one of his lawyers, Vibeke Hein Baera, who sits between the accused and the onlookers.

“Luckily, it was just a shoe,” Hein Baera said after the incident.

The attacker, a man of Iraqi origin whose brother was one of the 69 people Breivik shot dead on Utoya on 22 July, was quickly brought under control by security guards and escorted out of the courtroom as he continued to shout in English: “Go to Hell!”

The shoe attack was the first serious incident since the beginning of the 33-year-old right-wing extremist’s trial on 16 April.

Breivik has been charged with committing terrorist acts on 22 July when he killed a total of 77 people by first bombing a government building in Oslo before going on a shooting rampage on Utoya, where the ruling Labour Party’s youth wing was hosting a summer camp.

He has confessed to the acts but has refused to plead guilty, insisting his massacres were “cruel but necessary” to stop the Labour Party’s “multicultural experiment” and the “Muslim invasion” of Norway and Europe.

His mainly young victims were “legitimate targets”, he said.

The proceedings have so far been marked by tears and embraces among the survivors and victims’ family members gathered in the courtroom, but until Friday none of the onlookers had directly addressed the confessed killer.

From the BBC:

“You killed my brother! Go to hell!” the relative screamed in the courtroom.

The shoe-throwing incident brought spontaneous applause from members of the public in the courtroom.

American chimney swifts declining

This is a chimney swift video.

By Dawn M. Smith:

Multiple Threats Contribute to the Decline of the Chimney Swift

Populations of this small insectivorous bird are falling with pesticide residuals, changing insect populations and habitat loss each likely playing a part.

The chimney swift (Chaetura pelagica), built for roosting upright on the walls of caves and tree hollows relies on flies, beetles, termites, wasps and spiders for nourishment. This avian insectivore takes all of its food while flying.

In North America, Chimney Swift populations have been on the decline for a number of years. The reasons for this varies from region to region, and it is likely that in some places multiple factors are at work.

Providing Nest Sites Helps Chimney Swifts Recover in Some Areas

Chimney Swifts suffer from loss of nesting sites. Natural nesting sites include tree hollows and caves. With reduced forest habitat there are fewer tree hollows. In suburban areas, most homeowners won’t leave dead trees in place for wildlife. Restricted cave access for human safety reasons adds to habitat loss. But Chimney Swifts have proven adaptable, nesting in chimneys instead. Now, however, more people put wire mesh caps on their chimneys, and these nest sites are also disappearing.

Ex-Tony Blair minister helps illegal logging

This video from Britain is called Peter Mandelson confronted over MPs’ expense claims.

From daily The Guardian in Britain:

Lord Mandelson confirms he is advising company accused of illegal logging

Peer’s consultancy works for paper and pulp multinational alleged to have chopped down protected trees

Rob Evans and Kate Hodal in Jakarta

Thursday 10 May 2012 20.36 BST

Lord Mandelson has been recruited to advise a multinational company accused of illegally chopping down endangered rainforest.

The Labour peer and his staff in the political consultancy that he set up after leaving government have been meeting officials on behalf of Asia Pulp and Paper.

For more than a decade, APP, one of the world’s largest pulp and paper companies, has been accused by environmental groups such as Greenpeace of destroying thousands of hectares of Indonesian rainforest and endangering some of the world’s rarest animals. A growing number of firms have boycotted APP.

The disclosure comes as Mandelson and other peers are expected to face pressure from the House of Lords authorities to declare their clients.

Global Counsel, the consultancy Mandelson chairs, does not name its clients as it “respects their privacy”. But after inquiries by the Guardian, he has confirmed that Global Counsel has a contract with APP, the first time he has acknowledged a client of his firm. The company says it is helping APP meet new EU rules requiring timber imported from Indonesia to be sustainably sourced.

The peer acquired a large roster of contacts from his time as the European trade commissioner between 2004 and 2008, and as a key member of the administrations of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

There has been long-running concern about politicians who exploit their contacts and knowledge gained while in public office after they leave power. …

The peer has travelled twice to Jakarta in recent months and held meetings with the EU ambassador there; his staff have met members of the Indonesian government.

When Mandelson lost his post as business secretary after the 2010 general election, he set up the “strategic advice consultancy” with financial backing from WPP, the marketing services group headed by Sir Martin Sorrell. Under Whitehall rules, he was barred from lobbying ministers and officials in the British government for two years after he left office. It appears that he has been concentrating on getting work from foreign companies.

Mandelson has been accused of using a loophole in the Lords’ register of financial interests to sidestep a new requirement to disclose certain clients of Global Counsel. He is understood to reject the accusation on the grounds that he acted with advice from the Lords authorities. A Lords committee is reportedly recommending that peers who have set up consultancies declare their clients or leave the parliament.

APP is a controversial Chinese-Indonesian company owned by the Widjajas, a rich dynasty. In recent months, APP has come under growing pressure after it was accused of illegal logging in Indonesia and damaging the habitats of rare animals such as the Sumatran tiger. A year-long Greenpeace investigation, published in March, alleged that endangered trees, known as ramin, have been chopped down and sent to factories to be pulped and turned into paper. The trees grow in peat swamps in Indonesia where the dwindling number of surviving Sumatran tigers hunt. Greenpeace alleged that it found ramin logs in a paper mill belonging to APP on nine occasions over a year. Chopping down ramin trees, a protected species under an international treaty, has been illegal under Indonesian law since 2001. Wood from the rainforests is being turned into everyday products around the world such as photocopying paper, tissues and paper packaging, according to Greenpeace. …

Last month, three large companies said that they were going to stop buying paper products from APP, either for ever or until they were satisfied that the products were being produced sustainably.

At least 67 companies worldwide, such as Tesco, Kraft Foods and the office suppliers Staples, have boycotted APP since 2004, according to a Greenpeace list.

APP has consistently said it has always acted in an environmentally responsible manner, that it has not been destroying large areas of Indonesian rainforest and that it was a prime mover behind establishing a sanctuary for the Sumatran tiger.

A Greenpeace spokesperson : “Asia Pulp and Paper has been responsible for the destruction of vast swaths of Indonesia’s rainforests, including areas of habitat for the critically endangered Sumatran tiger. Mandelson joins a growing list of spin doctors and industry stooges who have tried to rehabilitate APP’s image.” …

The peer, who is also an adviser to investment bankers Lazard, has been recruiting to Global Counsel individuals whom he reportedly “rated in government and who have the skills and connections to help him in his business”. His staff include the ex-civil servants Stephen Adams and Duncan Buchanan.

Adams worked as a speechwriter for Mandelson at the European commission and the business department, while Buchanan was the head of the South Asia unit of UK Trade and Investment, the government agency that promotes exports.

More than a year after the EU’s law governing the timber trade came into force, a survey by WWF confirms that many EU countries are still failing to stop illegal wood products entering the EU markets: here.

United States rich get richer

This video is called Decline of Middle Class: Wealth / Income Distribution in USA, Plutocracy.

By Andre Damon in the USA:

Amid mass unemployment, corporate profits surge

11 May 2012

Amid deepening poverty and unemployment for masses of American working people, the largest US corporations once again posted record profits last year.

Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.

But despite having more money than ever, companies are refusing to invest and hire. Instead, they are paying out record bonuses to executives and hoarding what remains in cash.

The average CEO took home $12.14 million in 2011, up from $12.04 million in 2010 and $10.36 million in 2009, according to a report by the Economic Policy Institute published earlier this month.

The ratio of CEO pay to workers’ wages has also risen steadily, according to the report. The average CEO received 231 times in as much pay as the average worker in 2011, up from 228 times in 2010 and 193 times as much in 2009. It is rapidly making its way back up to the pre-crisis peak of 383.4 times the average worker set in 2000.

The money left over after the executives had stuffed their pockets was simply hoarded. Last year, corporations held $1.8 trillion in cash, up from $1.6 trillion in 2010, and nearly double the amount that they held in previous decades.

This hoarding of cash has come at the expense of productive investment. Over the past ten years, the share of corporate assets used for investment fell by a third for major corporations, while the portion of assets held as cash doubled, according to a report by the International Labor Organization published earlier this month.

The Battle Over CEO Pay: When the Top 1 Percent Take on the Top 0.01 Percent. Salvatore Babones, Truthout: “By all accounts, America’s corporations are doing better than ever. Corporate profits are at all-time record highs. Corporate taxes are at record lows. So, why are the top 1 percent so angry? It may be because America’s ever-rising inequality has finally caught up with them…. They’re not used to making sacrifices. As the top 1 percent start to share at least some of the indignities suffered by the other 99 percent, it is likely that their quiescence about rising inequality will start to change”: here.

Mayas did not believe in 2012 doomsday

Unprecedented Maya Mural Found, Contradicts 2012 “Doomsday” Myth

Under the Guatemalan jungle, 1,200-year-old paintings like no others.

Published May 10, 2012

In the last known largely unexcavated Maya megacity, archaeologists have uncovered the only known mural adorning an ancient Maya house, a new study says—and it’s not just any mural.

In addition to a still vibrant scene of a king and his retinue, the walls are rife with calculations that helped ancient scribes track vast amounts of time. Contrary to the idea the Maya predicted the end of the world in 2012, the markings suggests dates thousands of years beyond that.

Perhaps most important, the otherwise humble chamber offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of Maya society. (Video: Mysterious Maya Calendar & Mural Uncovered.)

“The paintings we have here—we’ve never found them anyplace else,” excavation leader William Saturno told National Geographic News.

And in today’s Xultún—to the untrained eye, just 12 square miles (31 square kilometers) of jungle floor—it’s a wonder Saturno’s team found the artwork at all.
