Edzard Ernst, expert on evidence based analysis of alternative medicine and author of ‘A Scientist in Wonderland’, talks to Going Underground host Afshin Rattansi about the efficacies of such treatments, and whether recent government suggestions that they should be integrated into the NHS are such a good idea. He gave up a professorship in Vienna to move to Britain to study the subject because alternative medicine is a ‘paradise for any researcher’ because there are so many unanswered questions. He saw miraculous cures effected by homeopathy such as people getting out of wheelchairs, and says you have to question if it is down to homeopathy or to the placebo effect.

Put not your trust in princes, especially not princes who talk to plants. But that’s what the government has decided to do. The Department of Health has funded the Prince of Wales Foundation for Integrated Healthcare to set up the Natural Healthcare Council to regulate 12 alternative therapies, such as aromatherapy, reflexology and homeopathy.
Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee has a not so pretty history of uncritical support for the Blairite-Brownite administrations, Iraq war or no Iraq war.
Now, when she correctly criticizes them at least on this point, will she finally wake up to other points?
