France’s centrist President Macron ignited a firestorm for praising Nazi collaborator leader Philippe Pétain for his role in World War I. Historian Adam Hochschild argues war resisters are the real heroes who should be honored, as Trump visits Paris to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI.

Pétain deserves not praise, but the sharpest possible criticism. Not only for helping Adolf Hitler in World War II by making France a fascist dictatorship, deporting French Jews to Hitler’s death camps and sending French soldiers to the genocidal nazi war on the Soviet Union. Also for his role in World War I, when he had hundreds of French soldiers killed for refusing to obey orders which meant death.

Yet even the irreparable is not exempt from the irresponsible, who, for personal or ideological reasons, slap the label “fake news” on historical truths. Over the past few years, this has been most notably the case with Éric Zemmour.
