YOUNG communist activist Mark Ashton, immortalised in the film Pride, will be remembered this weekend at a London church as a panel from the Aids memorial quilt goes on display at St Anne’s in Soho.

The panel commemorates Ashton, a former Young Communist League general secretary, who died of HIV in 1987.

It was made by his friend Chris Birch, who helped run a workshop at London Lighthouse in the 1990s for people making panels for loved ones who had died of Aids.

During the 1984-85 miners’ strike Mark, together with Mike Jackson, founded Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, made famous by the 2014 film Pride.

This weekend is the Aids Quilt Trail, where panels will be on show at venues across London — the first public display in 20 years.

Ashton’s panel can be seen at St Anne’s church between 1pm and 5pm on Sunday, and a list of all venues and opening times can be found at http://www.aidsquiltuk.org/quilt-trail
