Why is Amazon deleting negative reviews of Hillary Clinton’s new book?

Amazon, the world’s largest online reseller, has deleted over 1,000 negative comments on Hillary Clinton’s newly-released book, What Happened, to give the book a five-star rating.
The book’s Amazon user rating is higher than the most popular editions of War and Peace and A Tale of Two Cities, widely considered to be among the greatest books ever written.
Early on Wednesday, the day of its release, the book had an extremely low rating of two and a half stars, based on nearly 1,700 reviews. But that figure was slashed to just over 500 later in the day, and stands at 623 at the time of this writing. The rating shot up to 4.9, rounded up to five stars in the graphic shown to users.
Amazon sought to justify this blatant act of mass censorship. “We do however have mechanisms in place to ensure that the voices of many do not drown out the voices of a few and we remove customer reviews that violate our community guidelines,” an Amazon spokesperson told Fortune magazine.
As a result of these actions, the book has just 21 “critical” reviews and 602 “positive” ones. This is despite the fact that the top seven most popular customer reviews gave it one or two stars.
As a work of political writing, Clinton’s book does not deserve the perfect score that Amazon gives it.
Leaving aside interpretation and opinion, its description of the key events of the 2016 election presents a level of selectiveness that borders on falsification. It ignores the widely-documented bias inside the Democratic National Committee toward the Clinton campaign, including the rigging of several debates, which led to the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the head of the DNC, and engages in wild conspiracy theories about Russian intervention into the election campaign that it does not substantiate.
About half the book is filler, reading as though it was culled by speechwriters from recycled campaign rhetoric. The only parts that the reader can reliably infer were written by the candidate herself are the barbs of vitriol scattered throughout denouncing political allies and enemies alike.
Why, then, has Amazon intervened so aggressively to promote it? While commercial aims cannot be ruled out, Amazon’s concerns are primarily political, and its removal of the critical comments constitute an act of political censorship.
Clinton’s book is a manifesto for the growing drive by major corporations, working with the intelligence agencies and governments, to censor free speech on the Internet.
It provides the most comprehensive account to date of the narrative that Donald Trump’s victory was the result of a nefarious “Russian plot to sabotage my campaign and help elect Trump,” which she referred to as “the political equivalent of 9/11”.
This “attack” took the form of the propagation of “fake news”, which is a term bestowed by Clinton upon any fact that she deems embarrassing to her campaign. To prevent the propagation of such “fake news”, corporations must be empowered to block it.
She writes, “Much of what we see online is governed by a series of algorithms that determine what content appears in our Facebook and Twitter feeds, Google search results, and so on. One factor for these algorithms is popularity. If lots of users share the same post or click on the same link—and if key ‘influencers’ with large personal networks do as well—then it’s more likely to pop up on your screen.”
She adds, “Companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google have already begun taking steps—adjusting algorithms, deactivating bot networks, and partnering with fact-checkers—but they must do more.”
Those particularly susceptible to “fake news”, she writes, are those who opposed her on the left. “The Russians made a particular effort to target voters who had supported Bernie Sanders in the primaries,” Clinton writes, “including by planting fake news on pro-Sanders message boards and Facebook groups and amplifying attacks by so-called Bernie Bros.”
Clinton warns, ominously, “This can all happen again if we don’t stop it,” urging politicians to push harder on the “Russia investigation”.
Since the election, Facebook and Google (whose former CEO she praises as a key ally of her campaign) have both published documents stating their intent to crack down on “fake news”. Google has demonstratively acted on these intentions, slashing the traffic of left-wing, progressive, and anti-war websites, including the WSWS, whose traffic from the search engine has fallen by two-thirds.
Clinton’s book, aside from constituting a bitter and subjective rant, is a key component in the drive to censor free speech on the Internet. It has been carefully choreographed with statements by the intelligence agencies, high-ranking members of Congress such as Democratic Senator Mark Warner, the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and “investigations” by the New York Times and Washington Post.
This is why Amazon, a giant monopoly that fears growing discontent among its own highly-exploited workforce as much as it does the broader disaffection with the right-wing politics of the Democratic Party, is censoring criticism of Clinton’s book.

During the last election campaign a considerable number of people
emailed us incessantly, telling us how much they hated Bernie
Sanders, and how he should go straight to hell, even after Clinton
had secured the Democratic nomination.
And we would respond to their deaf ears that they were literally
dooming the chances of their own chosen candidate, by going out of
their way to alienate their best potential policy allies, and
spitefully and gratuitously so.
Bernie of course campaigned hard for Hillary. He did what he could.
But you would never know it from her tell nothing book, blaming him
for gently pointing out her conspicuous flaws as a candidate, as if
nobody would have otherwise noticed. As if Trump would never have
attacked her character if Bernie had not politely asked if we could
see her Wall Street speeches.
How quickly she has forgotten her own applause for Bernie when he
declared “enough of the damn emails.” Trump himself called Bernie
stupid in the moment for taking that off the table in the Democratic
debate.
“I was on my way to winning before . . . ” now claims Hillary,
blaming everybody but herself. Correction, at best Hillary was on her
way to a nail biter, just as we sadly predicted.
And why was that? How about the worst corporate VP pick possible,
when either Bernie as a running mate, which we were pushing for once
she won the nomination, or even Elizabeth Warren, would have swept
her into the White House in landslide? Wanna know how much Kaine
helped the ticket? On election night even his home state of VA was in
play.
How about her refusal to take a position on the TPP, about the most
unpopular proposal out there, in her platform? And those are just
some of the things she could have done differently during the
campaign itself, leaving all past baggage aside.
Based on her own campaign decisions, Hillary was at best on her way
to an interminable crucifixion at the hands of a Congress STILL
controlled by the Republicans. It was not just Trump chanting “lock
her up,” this was the entire right wing echo chamber, and it had been
going on nonstop for decades.
Hillary was on her way to winning until Hillary happened.
Was Comey NOT supposed to investigate questionable stuff. That was
the complain Trump had himself against Comey as the reason for firing
him.
The irony is that it is now Trump who is being crucified, and boy
howdy to that, at the hands of Robert Mueller and his nightmare team
of seasoned prosecutors.
“I guess people just don’t like me,” now says Clinton, as if it’s all
their fault, not hers. Lucky she was running against someone ever
MORE disliked than herself. And she STILL could not win. Being hated
by more people than anyone else sure didn’t stop him, did it now?
“It was the sexism and the misogyny,” laments Clinton. Oh, really?
How is it then that Hillary lost the vote of white women in this
election? Are women the “bros” now too??
Russia spent what, $100,000 on facebook? How was a billion dollars in
corporate Hillary campaign money chest supposed to compete with that?
So where does this all leave us?
The real lesson to be learned from this campaign is that Democrats
lose by running as Republicans. And the person pointing the way to
path of victory REMAINS Bernie Sanders.
This week Bernie introduced a systematic plan to transition to a full
single payer system. There is a compelling majority of the American
people available to rally behind this program, to put the . . . wait
for it . . . DEMOCRATS back in political power, on this one issue
alone. All the other potential presidential candidates have signed on
as co-sponsors, because they recognize that this is the wave of the
future.
But Bernie himself is providing the leadership we so desperately need
most of all. That is why we continue to stand with Bernie, and will

Although Amazon claims it publishes only “official sources for advice” on the COVID-19 virus, Amazon has allowed books promoting wild conspiracy theories that the virus is exaggerated, a hoax or human-made and masks and quarantines are useless. During the pandemic Amazon has also listed products that are dangerous quack “cures” for COVID-19.
Hostility to China as national policy impacts every area of discussion. This is reflected in the trade war, sanctions and military operations, and by canceling educational and cultural exchanges and any attention or coverage on any level of China’s accomplishments. In retrospect, it is hardly surprising it extends to blocking books and topics of discussion.
Many important chapters in this anthology were written in March, April, and May of 2020 as the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S., and people were actively looking for answers and asking questions.
The questions working people worldwide started asking sent U.S. media outlets and private corporate platforms into a wall of censorship and political repression. Why has China done so much better in containing COVID-19 and saving lives? The answer corporate media gave was an onslaught of racist and imperialist attacks against China including claims of dishonesty, brutality and suppression of information. Several major news sources even went so far as to accuse China of manufacturing the virus. Any evidence contrary to the corporate narrative was thoroughly suppressed.
This book was written by people around the world and edited by a U.S. activist and a Chinese activist. The evidence and data available provide a very different answer from that given the corporate media. China contained the virus because their free medical care and planned economic system is science based and intensely cooperative. By every statistic, countries building socialism did far better in combating the virus — Cuba, China, Laos, Vietnam and North Korea, to name a few. We hope you read this book and explore the reasons why China and other countries building socialism did far better than the capitalist world did.
