  1. ‘Give asylum to Sri Lankan migrants’

Australia: The head of the Australian Workers Union has called on the country’s Labour administration to grant asylum to 260 Sri Lankan migrants bound for Australia who have been detained by Indonesian authorities.

The Sri Lankans, who are docked in west Java, have refused to hand themselves over to Indonesian police and have called on the international community to “come together and make a decision on finding a way to get us out of this country.”

Union national secretary Paul Howes insisted that Australia should not ship asylum-seekers back to countries that have not ratified the United Nations Convention on Refugees, such as Indonesia.
