Chilean officers convicted of murder of singer in 1973
In Chile, eight former armed forces officers have been sentenced to prison for 15 years for the murder of the singer Victor Jara in 1973. The judge imposed the sentence of 15 years and one day after years of investigation. On 16 September it is 45 years ago that Jara was tortured and shot.
The then 40-year-old Jara and his students, fellow teachers and others were imprisoned in a football stadium in the capital Santiago, which was later named after him.
According to prisoners who survived, soldiers shattered Jara’s fingers so he could never play guitar again. Then he was executed. 44 bullets were found in his body days later.
His daughter and wife have fought for justice for years. In 2009 his body was excavated for investigation.
