US to ‘consider’ letting Chilean judges see CIA Pinochet files

US President Barack Obama pledged on Monday to “consider” helping Chile win justice for the thousands of its citizens who were murdered or tortured by General Augusto Pinochet‘s US-backed dictatorship.
But Mr Obama avoided saying sorry for Washington’s meddling in the country’s internal affairs.
At a joint news conference with Chilean President Sebastian Pinera in Santiago a reporter asked Mr Obama if he would share classified CIA documents with Chilean judges investigating the deaths of former presidents Salvador Allende and Eduardo Frei Montalva as well as thousands of other opponents of the fascistic regime.
The reporter also asked Mr Obama if he would apologise for the US campaign, orchestrated by the Central Intelligence Agency under orders from then president Richard Nixon, that destabilised Chile and facilitated the 1973 military coup that ousted Mr Allende’s socialist administration.
Mr Obama said his government would “certainly consider and we would like to co-operate” with Chile on the matter.
“The history of relations between the United States and Latin America has at times been extremely rocky,” he said, before insisting that “Chile’s extraordinary progress in the past two decades has been fully supported by the United States.”
The entire centrist coalition in Chile’s lower house signed an open letter to Mr Obama asking for an apology as well as co-operation in sharing uncensored versions of 25,000 declassified US documents on the 1973-90 Pinochet dictatorship.
Chile’s truth commission has determined that 3,065 leftwingers and other opponents of the regime were murdered by its security apparatus.
Chilean judges are still pursuing criminal investigations into nearly a third of those killings, including those of the two former presidents.
