Trump outs his misogyny

FOR months, US Republican hopeful Donald Trump has vented his spleen at targets he holds responsible for the alleged decline the US. Among his chosen culprits are immigrants, Muslims, liberals, the mass media, the political Establishment and the leadership of the Communist Party of China.

Although delivered in a growl, his is a self-pitying whine that bears no relation to the continuing position of the US as the strongest economic and military power in the world.

To the millions of US workers and their families who have experienced a real decline in their living standards, he offers pseudo-patriotic platitudes while demanding greater freedom for the very big business market forces that have wreaked such havoc in so many local communities.

But now, it appears, Trump has hit a rock. His campaign has become quagmired in the swamp of male chauvinism and machismo.

His attempts to backtrack from remarks a week ago that women who have abortions should be punished are failing. Women and not a few men are shocked and angry. Not even the extreme anti-abortion faction in the US shares this view.

His remarks also remind at least half of the electorate that Trump has made a string of comments over recent years that betray his real attitude — and that of many of his most ardent male followers — towards women.

He brags about his sexual prowess and the size of one bodily appendage in particular because women are bedroom fodder to be conquered and consumed. He frequently parades and poses with purportedly beautiful women — whether his daughters or agency models — because women are also adornments.

He thinks the menstrual cycle is a suitable subject for jibes, jokes and insults. He has never campaigned for equal pay or women’s promotion at work because he doesn’t think they are equipped for arduous physical or mental taks or for the boardroom jungle rightfully ruled by tycoons like himself.

No wonder his support among women trails 20 points behind that among men, with almost half of female Republican voters in the primaries telling pollsters they are unlikely to back him in the presidential race.

Fred Flintstone might have won Wilma’s vote by clubbing her over the head and dragging her to the ballot box, but this is not the Stone Age and most US women are not Wilmas.
