VATICAN: The Legion of Christ religious order identified 33 of its priests and 71 of its seminarians as guilty of sexual abuse in a study published at the weekend.

The order enjoyed huge power under pope John Paul II, despite the Vatican holding documentary evidence that its founder Marcial Maciel was a paedophile.

John Paul II’s secretary of state Cardinal Angelo Sodano long blocked any investigation into the Legion.

Pope Francis accepted his resignation as dean of the College of Cardinals on Saturday.
