THREE former police officers and two other men were in the dock yesterday charged with offences relating to the Hillsborough football stadium disaster, in which 96 Liverpool football fans died.
The five appeared in Preston Crown Court, where judge Mr Justice William Davis ruled at a pre-trial hearing that their case can be heard in the same court.
Former West Yorkshire and Merseyside chief constable Sir Norman Bettison appeared with fellow retired police officers Donald Denton and Alan Foster.
Alongside them were former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary Graham Mackrell and solicitor Peter Metcalf, who acted for South Yorkshire Police following the 1989 disaster.
A sixth man — former police officer David Duckenfield — has been charged but is subject to a separate procedure.
No pleas were entered by the defendants but their lawyers indicated at an earlier hearing that they will plead not guilty.
