Founded in Germany in 2014, the far-right, anti-Islamic movement Pegida — which stands for “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West” — has since spread throughout western Europe

On February 28, VICE News traveled to Newcastle in northeast England for the inaugural demonstration of spinoff organization Pegida UK.

Six arrested following savage attack on teenage asylum-seeker

ANTI-RACISTS held an urgent “refugees welcome here” vigil yesterday following a vicious unprovoked gang attack on a teenage asylum-seeker.

Six people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and violent disorder after the “savage attack” on a suburban street left the 17-year-old fighting for his life.

The teenager, a Kurdish Iranian, was waiting at a bus stop with two friends outside The Goat pub in Croydon, south London, at 11.40pm on Friday when a gang of up to 10 approached them.

They attacked the teen when they found out he was an asylum-seeker, knocking him to the ground and beating him mercilessly.

Nearby residents said that a crowd of around 20 looked on as the mob punched and kicked the victim so badly he was left with a fractured skull and a blood clot to the brain.

The beating stopped only when police sirens were heard approaching.

His two friends escaped with minor injuries, however the teenager remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Stand Up to Racism called the emergency vigil at Croydon’s Centrale Shopping Centre from 2pm yesterday in response to the horrific attack.

And condemnation of the attack poured in from across political party lines yesterday.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “Absolutely shocked at attack on young Kurdish asylum-seeker, who came here searching for safety. I fervently hope he makes a full recovery.”

Shadow home secretary Dianne Abbott said: “Sadly this is not an isolated incident, but part of a sustained increase in hate crimes that this Tory government is yet to offer any effective response to.

“With right-wing politicians across the world scapegoating migrants, refugees and others for their economic problems, we are seeing a deeply worrying rise in the politics of hate.

Weyman Bennett of Unite Against Fascism, which co-organised yesterday’s vigil, said: “An atmosphere of hatred and intolerance has been built up against refugees and we believe this attack reflects that.

“We must unite and give solidarity to the victim and we must demonstrate our disgust at vicious, racist attacks and those who carry them out.

“We are staging today’s vigil in response to this vicious attack, and will be demonstrating in Croydon on Saturday.”

A spokesperson for anti-racism campaign group Hope Not Hate said: “It is time to stand together, and stand firm, against those who would wish to target the vulnerable and minorities in our society.”

Housing Minister Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central, described the attackers as “scum.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Hate crime has no place in London, Britain or anywhere else.

“Our communities will not be divided by those who seek to sow hate.”

Refugee Council advocacy director Dr Lisa Doyle said: “We hope the perpetrators of this appalling attack are swiftly brought to justice and we wish the victim a full and speedy recovery.”

The six arrested were three 20-year-old men, a 20-year-old woman and a man and woman both aged 24.

An anti-racism demonstration will be staged in Croydon at 2pm on Saturday April 8.

Hundreds out to oppose EDL and Britain First’s Westminster attack protest. By Felicity Collier

LONDONERS united against far-right groups spewing their hate-filled rubbish in Westminster on Saturday.

Some 250 people from trade unions and faith and community groups joined a Unite Against Fascism (UAF) a counter-rally against 150 people from Britain First (BF) and the English Defence League (EDL).

One-time EDL leader Tommy Robinson was reportedly escorted by police on his way to the rally.

Protesters chanted: “We are black, white, Asian and we’re Jews, and there are many, many more of us than you!”

UAF joint secretary Sabby Dhalu said: “The respectful and compassionate nature towards those killed and their loved ones that is reflected in the majority of British people is in stark contrast to the far right.

“Fascists such as BF and the EDL have no concern for the victims of this attack.

“While the turnout by fascists today was pathetic, we must remember the threat they currently pose in Britain is not in numbers, but in their attempt to whip up fear, hatred, division and violence.

“The vast majority of society opposes fascism, and we stand firm in our resolve not to allow the far-right to grow in Britain as they have in other parts of Europe.”

    Fellow joint secretary Wey

man Bennett said: “The murder of Jo Cox, the shocking rise in hate crime, and the rise of the far right in Europe show that it is critical we unite against fascism, racism, Islamophobia and anti-semitism at this time.”

Transport union RMT general secretary Mich Cash, who sent his solidarity to the march, said: “Neither BF nor the EDL have significant forces, but their efforts to inflame Islamophobia need opposing.

“Both groups are notorious Islamophobes whose concern is not with the victims or their relatives, but only lie in racism. We should not be divided by such fascists.”

Scotland Yard said that 14 people were arrested trying to prevent the fascists from marching.

UAF is also organising a Stop Marine Le Pen rally at London’s Conway Hall on May 2, discussing the French presidential elections, and will protest outside the French embassy on April 24 at 6pm.

Drive the fascists off the streets – forward to workers power and socialism!

LAST Friday night, a racist gang attacked and seriously injured a teenage asylum seeker in Croydon.

The Kurdish Iranian boy, age 17, was waiting with two friends at a bus stop when he was set upon by about eight racists. The attackers asked the boy where he was from before attacking him. His friends suffered minor injuries in the attack, but the teenager is reported to have sustained a fractured skull and a blood clot on his brain. Police said he remains in a ‘serious but stable’ condition.

Four men and two women were arrested on Saturday night. They were all held on suspicion of attempted murder or violent disorder, the Metropolitan Police said. Speaking about the attack, Chief Supt Jeff Boothe said: ‘A number of bystanders and eyewitnesses tried to intervene and say to the attackers that enough is enough. By all accounts they didn’t actually stop until the sound of police sirens was heard in the background.’

The next day, a fascist march was held near Trafalgar Square under the banner ‘London Under Attack’, organised by the Britain First Party, and the English Defence League (EDL). This march was correctly challenged by the Unite Against Fascism group, who confronted the right wing march and were then attacked by the police who arrested 14 of their number.

The march was held ten days after the Westminster terrorist attack on parliament which gave the fascists their opportunity to make their bid to rally behind their banner the most backward sections of society. In fact, asylum seekers and all refugees are welcome to the UK because they are the victims of terrorism.

Their countries, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Libya have all been destroyed by the imperialist powers from Blair and Bush down to Trump and May who are continuing with these terrorist attacks. It is the imperialists who are the terrorists, whose deeds created ISIS and put it into the shade!

The fascists are tools of imperialism, who come on the scene to blame the victims of imperialist terrorism for the carnage that the imperialist powers have themselves set up. This is not the first time that they have come onto the scene in this way. In the 1950s, when West Indian workers came to the UK at the invitation of the government, the Mosleyites, just released from war time internment, came onto the scene to make West Indian workers the scapegoats for the appalling conditions that workers in areas like North Kensington lived in.

They organised race riots – Mosley stood for parliament in North Kensington, where on May 15th 1959, a West Indian carpenter Kelso Cochrane was stabbed to death by a gang of racists. Cochrane’s murderer Patrick Digby wielded the stiletto and was arrested but never charged by the police.

The Socialist Labour League put out a pamphet calling for ‘Workers Defence Squads for Notting Hill Gate’, and mobilised the working class to fight the fascists and drive them off the streets. The Tories meanwhile brought forward Enoch Powell to make his infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech urging to ‘send them back’.

The working class mobilised and defeated the fascists and racists in the 1950s and 60s.
Today, with world capitalism in its greatest crisis, the fascists are being mobilised to make another attempt to split the working class so that blood-soaked capitalism can survive for a couple more decades.

The working class must now be mobilised to drive the fascists off the streets.

Nearly £10,000 raised for 17-year-old victim

    by Peter Lazenby

THE 17-year-old asylum-seeker seriously injured a vicious racist assault in south London is beginning to recover, police said yesterday.

An online appeal for donations to help him has raised nearly £10,000 in two days.

The Kurdish-Iranian teenager was waiting for a bus with two friends in Croydon, south London, at 11.50pm on Friday when they were approached by a gang of around 10 people.

The gang attacked them on discovering the three were asylum-seekers.

Two received only minor injuries after getting away from their pursuers, but the third was caught, beaten and kicked repeatedly in the head and face. He suffered a fractured skull and a blood clot on the brain.

The gang is thought to have been drinking in a nearby pub beforehand.

Local residents say 20 people watched the attack, which ended only when police sirens were heard approaching.

Five people — Daryl Davis, 20, Danyelle Davis, 24, Barry Potts, 20, George Walder, 20, and Jack Walder, 24 — all from Croydon, appeared at Croydon magistrates’ court yesterday charged with violent disorder.

George Walder was also charged with racially aggravated grievous bodily harm.

The Committee for the Defence of the Iranian People’s Rights (Codir) said it was not shocked by the attack, coming against a “backdrop of a heightened atmosphere of racism, hate and intolerance,” in which asylum-seekers are made the scapegoats for Britain’s economic woes.

The campaign called on the British government to do all it could to help Iranians who have fled the “perilous” country — including those from the Kurdish minority — to assimilate and grant them asylum.

It said: “Codir calls on all those campaigning against the violation of human rights in Iran to stand in solidarity with the young man and his family and to recognise that while the attack was one borne of the streets here in the UK, it is the very woeful situation inside Iran that leaves so many of its daughters and sons no other choice than to leave in the first place.”

A fundraising appeal on the Just Giving website was launched on Saturday by Bridey Watson from Bristol.

Ms Watson told the Morning Star: “What happened is horrific. I was shocked when I heard about the number of people involved in the attack.

“All of us have an opportunity to make a difference for this young man.

“We want to help him overcome this horrible ordeal and show that he is loved and welcome here in the United Kingdom.

“But it is not just about him. We need to unite as a country. In World War II we welcomed Jewish children into our country and they became a vital part of our society.

“Today people are leaving their countries not to steal our jobs, but because they are in dire situations in fear of their lives. Many have lost their families. They have made dangerous journeys. We should be supporting them.”

She blamed “certain elements of the press” for “dehumanising” asylum-seekers.

EIGHT more people appeared in court yesterday following a racist attack in south London which left a teenage asylum-seeker in hospital fighting for his life.

Kurdish Iranian Reker Ahmed, 17, was standing at a bus stop in Croydon with two friends, Iraqi Kurd Dilshad Mohammed and Hamo Mustafa, at about 11.50pm on Friday when they were approached by a gang of about 10 people.

When the gang found out that Reker and his friends were asylum-seekers the three were viciously attacked.

Two escaped after suffering minor injuries but Reker was caught, knocked to the ground, beaten and kicked in the head.

A crowd of about 20 looked on, with some joining the assault, only stopping when police sirens were heard.

The youngster suffered severe injuries including a fractured spine, fractured skull and a blood clot on the brain. He is now out of intensive care and recovering but is likely to be left with permanent scars.

A total of 13 people have appeared in court over a two-day period and police say a dozen more are being sought. They believe that more than 30 people may have been involved.

The attack has prompted an outpouring of support for Reker.

Bridey Watson from Bristol launched an appeal on Saturday on the Just Giving website for funds to help him.

Its original target was £3,500 but the fund passed the £25,000 mark yesterday with some donating as much as £500 as members of the public showed their disgust at the attack.

Fundraiser Ms Watson said: “People care and want to make him feel that he’s welcomed and they want to support him on his journey back to regaining his health.

“Every small act of kindness that someone can give is truly life-changing.”

Philip Brassington, who left a donation of £100 on Monday, said: “I hope we can all go some way to reassuring this young man that the majority of us from the UK welcome and support all people in need.”

ANTI-RACISTS will come together in a show of unity in Croydon today following the horrific beating of a teenage asylum-seeker in that part of south-east London last week.

Reker Ahmed, a 17-year-old Kurdish-Iranian, was waiting at a bus stop with two friends when he was approached by a gang of about 10 people at 11.50pm on Friday.

When the gang discovered that Ahmed and his friends were asylum-seekers, they launched a frenzied attack.

While Ahmed’s friends managed to flee after suffering only minor injuries, the gang caught up with him, knocked him to the ground and kicked him repeatedly in the head and face.

Around 20 people looked on, some of them joining in the attack.

Reker suffered a fractured skull and spine and a blood clot on the brain.

Thirteen people have appeared in court on charges linked to the attack.

Stand Up to Racism has called today’s demonstration to oppose racist attacks and to declare “refugees and migrants welcome here.”

Unite Against Fascism’s Weyman Bennett said: “Trade unionists, politicians and people from the estates of Croydon will come together to show unity against this vicious attack.”

Bridey Watson from Bristol, who set up a Just Giving appeal to raise funds for Reker, said the fund had reached £54,736 in six days — far exceeding its original target of £3,500.

“There have been thousands of messages of support on the lines of: ‘This is not us,’ ‘This is not what we stand for’,” she said.

The demonstration is supported by Disabled People Against Cuts, the University and College Union Croydon College branch, Croydon Assembly, Unite retired members and the National Union of Teachers Croydon branch.
