Indigenous people fear their lands may be opened to big business and landowners due to changes announced by the Minister of Justice.
With the expectation that the Lower House of the Brazilian Congress will vote in favor of the pension reform proposed by President Michel Temer (PMDB) within the next few weeks, on March 15, 1 million workers and youth protested across all of the country’s 26 states. It was the largest demonstration in Brazil since the impeachment of former Workers Party (PT) president Dilma Rousseff last August: here.

OUSTED Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff voiced anger on Sunday that coup “president” Michel Temer claims credit for a water scheme initiated by herself and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The Workers Party leaders attended the inauguration of the San Francisco River Transposition project to transfer water to four dry northeastern states.
The inauguration was organised by leaders of social movements, artists and intellectuals in the city of Monteiro in Paraiba state.
“The coup is not over yet. It is under way with systematic lies like the one lived here in Monteiro, where someone who never raised a finger to the diversion of these waters dares to take credit for it now,” declared Ms Rousseff.
“I am very proud to see the water come here. I fought a lot for this together with Lula,” she added.
“They [the right-wing] always knew that the democracy of our government benefited the Brazilian people.
“They learnt that during the four elections we won and they lost, because they never got to present projects for the development of the country.”
Mr da Silva said: “Coming from where I come from and getting where I am today was only through the hand of God and the Brazilian people. I’m not a professional, I’m not a lawyer, I didn’t go to college. But I know what it’s like to have a big belly full of bad things from drinking dirty water.
“I have honour and I am proud to be able to contribute to the fact that this town has water today.”
