We spoke to Ray Johnson, the father of young Conservative Party activist Elliott Johnson – who took his own life having previously complained he was bullied. The party has insisted it wasn’t aware of serious accusations against Mark Clarke until weeks before Elliott Johnson took his own life.

May congratulated ‘Tatler Tory’ for ‘good campaign’

Monday 22nd August 2016

THERESA MAY warmly congratulated so-called “Tatler Tory” Mark Clarke, accused of serious bullying, for an election campaign now embroiled in a bullying scandal.

A video has come to light shows the Prime Minister praising Mr Clarke for his work as director of the Road Trip campaign, which bussed in activists to marginal seats ahead of the 2015 election.

Theresa May ‘Praised’ Mark Clarke, Activist In Bullying Row, In Video Of PM With ‘Tatler Tory’

21 August 2016

Theresa May warmly congratulated the so-called “Tatler Tory” at the centre of the Conservative bullying row during a party campaign event, it has been reported.

The Lamiat Sabin article continues:

The footage was unearthed during an investigation into the suicide of young activist Elliott Johnson, who killed himself a month after complaining that he had been bullied by Mr Clarke.

Ms May, who was home secretary at the time, is heard telling Mr Clarke: “What you are doing is absolutely tremendous. Road Trip 2015 is great. Thank you, Mark, for all you are doing.”

Mr Clarke, former chairman of youth group Conservative Future, then received a round of applause at the event, filmed during the 2014 Rochester by-election campaign, according to the Mail on Sunday.

He has denied claims that he bullied, blackmailed and threatened MPs and young Tory members. He also denies using drugs and sexual activity to blackmail or harass party activists.

The footage emerged after an inquiry by law firm Clifford Chance found there had been repeated complaints about Mr Clarke’s conduct after he was appointed to head the Road Trip campaign.

The inquiry found flaws in the Conservative Party’s campaign headquarters complaints procedure, including the lack of a confidential help-line or email address.

Mr Clarke’s file from when he stood as a candidate for Tooting in 2010 included reports of aggressive and bullying conduct towards his campaign director, according to the inquiry report published last Wednesday.

Senior figures including then party co-chairmen Lord Feldman and Grant Shapps, who were both forced to resign, were not told of the allegations.
The newspaper also reported that Ms May had since given a No 10 job to one of Mr Clarke’s “associates,” Jimmy McLoughlin, son of current Conservative Party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin.

Little Jimmy was formerly head of external affairs at the Institute of Directors.

There was no response from Downing Street about the video but a Westminster source said: “Theresa is known as an active grassroots campaigner and would always support efforts to get Conservative MPs elected.”
