Somalia: Journalist Killed, Another Wounded in Mogadishu

6 September 2011

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is shocked by the death of a Malaysian television cameraman and the wounding of another TV journalist in Mogadishu.

Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, 39, who arrived in Mogadishu with a humanitarian aid organization, was shot dead around 6:00 p.m. on 2 September 2011 at the KM4 junction in Mogadishu’s city centre. He was hit by a bullet allegedly fired by African Union peacekeeping troops, according to journalists who were at the KM4 junction. The bullet reportedly penetrated Nor’s chest.

Nor, who died while receiving treatment, was accompanied by Aziz Reza Mazlan, a TV3 cameramen. Mazlan was shot and slightly injured in the incident. The two journalists arrived in Mogadishu on 28 August with the Putera 1 Malaysia Club to cover the humanitarian aid activities of the organization.

“We extend our condolences to the family and colleagues of Noramfaizul Mohd Nor. This is an appalling incident, especially considering that Nor came for a humanitarian mission and ended up losing his life. We call on the African Union mission to thoroughly investigate this deadly incident,” said NUSOJ Secretary General Omar Faruk Osman.

Nor, who left behind two children and their mother, is the second journalist in 2011 to have allegedly been killed by African Union troops in Mogadishu.

Those “African Union peacekeeping troops” are basically Ugandan soldiers, sent to Somalia as cannon fodder in the Pentagon’s “Global War on Terror”.

“War is Peace” was a slogan in George Orwell’s novel 1984. Today, it seems to be the slogan of the Pentagon in Washington and of its ally, Ugandan dictator Museveni.
