Coronavirus: Bolsonaro fires health minister over pandemic response

Brazil’s health minister has been fired by the country’s right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro for his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Luiz Henrique Mandetta tweeted that Mr Bolsonaro had handed him his notice.

Contrary to Bolsonaro, Mr Mandetta is a doctor.

President Bolsonaro had publicly criticised Mr Mandetta for urging people to observe social distancing and stay indoors.

The Brazilian leader disagreed with these measures, instead downplaying the virus as “a little flu”. …

The two have been at odds for weeks. Where the president has made light of the outbreak and promoted unproven treatments, Mr Mandetta has largely urged people to follow guidelines that are being brought in all over the world.

While regional governors who enforced lockdown orders were praised by Mr Mandetta, they were attacked by Mr Bolsonaro.

Tensions then escalated on Sunday, when the health minister gave a television interview in which he urged the government to speak with a unified voice on the crisis, effectively a criticism of President Bolsonaro’s response.

The news of Mr Mandetta’s firing was greeted with panelaços – pot-banging on the balconies of self-isolated Brazilians angry with the way Jair Bolsonaro has handled this crisis.

With Luiz Henrique Mandetta now gone, it ends a stand-off between the two politicians that has threatened to overshadow the challenges of fighting the pandemic. But it opens up a new chapter – one of concern as to how Brazil will handle this urgent health crisis with a new minister at the helm.

Mr Mandetta had been widely praised for his daily briefings and leadership – a man who said his method was one based on science and global health advice. His approval ratings have soared in recent weeks but Bolsonaro … has seen his ratings take a dive. He has publicly jeered at the measures, insisting on going out in public and meeting people, even shaking their hands.

Firing a health minister in the middle of a pandemic – especially in a country where medical professionals are warning of an impending collapse of the health system – isn’t exactly Bolsonaro’s finest hour. …

A total of 1,764 people have died with Covid-19 in Brazil, while the country has had 29,165 confirmed cases, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.
