Brazilian Bolsonaro wants more deaths, more profits

This 7 January 2019 video says about itself:

Brazilian stocks reach record high as Bolsonaro sworn in | Money Talks

Brazil’s stock market has started the New Year with a bang, hitting a record high after former general Jair Bolsonaro

No, Bolsonaro is not a former general, but a former captain. Though full of praise for the twentieth century generals’ dictatorship in Brazil. Like former Ku Klux Klan Imperial Wizard David Duke is full of praise for Bolsonaro.

was sworn-in as the country’s new president. Despite his attacks on women, minorities and the gay community, investors have been drawn to his promise to reform Latin America’s largest economy. But some fear his plans could be derailed by a hostile opposition, as Paolo Montecillo reports.

For more on the new Brazilian government’s economic policies, we speak to Armando Castelar, economics professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Not only David Duke of the Ku Klux Klan, also billionaires like Donald Trump and NATO military alliance pundits all over the world support Bolsonaro.

Now, with the death toll of Brazilians killed by the coronavirus rising, Bolsonaro wants it to rise even more in tandem with the stock market rising, by forcing workers to work in crowded factory halls. Sacking for that even his health minister, a right-winger, but contrary to Bolsonaro a right-winger who has studied medicine.

By Katy Wilson, BBC corespondent, today:

Coronavirus: Bolsonaro fires health minister over pandemic response

Brazil’s health minister has been fired by the country’s right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro for his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Luiz Henrique Mandetta tweeted that Mr Bolsonaro had handed him his notice.

Contrary to Bolsonaro, Mr Mandetta is a doctor.

President Bolsonaro had publicly criticised Mr Mandetta for urging people to observe social distancing and stay indoors.

The Brazilian leader disagreed with these measures, instead downplaying the virus as “a little flu”. …

The United States neonazi, Trump-supporting and self-styled ‘Christian’ website the Daily Stormer consistently calls coronavirus ‘the flu’.

The two have been at odds for weeks. Where the president has made light of the outbreak and promoted unproven treatments, Mr Mandetta has largely urged people to follow guidelines that are being brought in all over the world.

While regional governors who enforced lockdown orders were praised by Mr Mandetta, they were attacked by Mr Bolsonaro.

Tensions then escalated on Sunday, when the health minister gave a television interview in which he urged the government to speak with a unified voice on the crisis, effectively a criticism of President Bolsonaro’s response.

The news of Mr Mandetta’s firing was greeted with panelaços – pot-banging on the balconies of self-isolated Brazilians angry with the way Jair Bolsonaro has handled this crisis.

With Luiz Henrique Mandetta now gone, it ends a stand-off between the two politicians that has threatened to overshadow the challenges of fighting the pandemic. But it opens up a new chapter – one of concern as to how Brazil will handle this urgent health crisis with a new minister at the helm.

Mr Mandetta had been widely praised for his daily briefings and leadership – a man who said his method was one based on science and global health advice. His approval ratings have soared in recent weeks but Bolsonaro … has seen his ratings take a dive. He has publicly jeered at the measures, insisting on going out in public and meeting people, even shaking their hands.

Firing a health minister in the middle of a pandemic – especially in a country where medical professionals are warning of an impending collapse of the health system – isn’t exactly Bolsonaro’s finest hour. …

A total of 1,764 people have died with Covid-19 in Brazil, while the country has had 29,165 confirmed cases, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro sacks health minister as Amazonian capital of Manaus is first to face health collapse. By Miguel Andrade, 17 April 2020. Federal and local health authorities in Brazil have widely admitted losing control of the COVID-19 spread, and now Bolsonaro expects a new minister to provide a veneer of rationality to his neglect of the disease.
