Lego stops advertising in racist Daily Mail

Hurray for the Blackshirts, Daily Mail 1934 fascist propaganda

The Daily Mail has a long history of far Right sympathies, as this 1934 article by its owner, Viscount Rothermere, in support of the Blackshirts of British nazi leader Sir Oswald Mosley, shows.

Lego to stop adverts in hateful Daily Mail paper

Monday 14th November 2016

LEGO will stop advertising in the Daily Mail after pressure from the Stop Funding Hate campaign, the company announced on Saturday.

The campaign has targeted companies urging them to rethink their support for right-wing newspapers over misleading headlines about child refugees.

The Danish company tweeted: “We have finished the agreement with the Daily Mail and are not planning any future promotional activity with the newspaper.”

Lego are the first big company to withdraw advertising after pressure from the social media campaign.

A campaign spokesperson said: “Stop Funding Hate welcomes the decision from Lego. We are asking brands to listen to their customers when they tell them they want to stop funding hate, and that is what they’ve done.

“People are becoming more aware that the money they spend could end up supporting publications whose stories, language or portrayal of certain people fuels division. This urgently needs to be addressed. These headlines harm people.”

AN INDEPENDENT news website facing legal action by the Daily Mail said yesterday that it has raised £10,000 for its defence through crowdfunding.

Byline Media received a letter from Mail editor Paul Dacre earlier this month threatening to sue for libel.

The allegation relates to reports published by Byline at the beginning of March about the Mail’s use of private eye Steve Whittamore two years after he had been convicted of data theft in 2007.

The website claimed that the Mail had given hefty payments to Mr Whittamore, £150,000 in all, and reported the investigator’s claim that the bosses who signed off his payments must have been aware of his dodgy methods of obtaining information.

Byline director Peter Jukes said that it had contacted the Mail offering it the right of reply.

He told the Star: “The Mail didn’t ask for corrections, it just told us to take the article down. “We’ll crowdfund a defence and will not be cowed by big media barons who want to silence genuine public-interest investigative journalism.”

Media Reform Coalition think tank chairman Dr Justin Schlosberg told the Star that this was a classic case of independent media versus “wealth and power being used to abuse the libel law.”

He said: “No-one has been more vocal about the need to protect papers from libel [actions] than Paul Dacre,” noting that the Mail editor has complained about such litigation’s chilling effect on expression in the press.

In 2009, the Guardian reported that Mr Dacre had condemned “greedy libel law firms” after the Mail was forced to print front-page apologies and pay damages to the parents of missing tot Madeleine McCann.

As the Star went to press, Byline was looking to publish the Mail’s responses to further questions over hiring Mr Whittamore.

RIGHT-WING hate rag the Daily Mail was widely condemned for sexism yesterday after publishing a front page headline comparing the legs of Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon.

The newspaper featured a picture of the Prime Minister and SNP leader after the two met for talks with the headline: “Never mind Brexit, who won Legs-it!”

Labour shadow mental health minister Barbara Keeley condemned it as “disgraceful sexist nonsense” and “an insult to our senior women politicians.”

Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said that “this sexism must be consigned to history.”

Green Party deputy leader Amelia Womack has submitted a formal complaint to toothless press regulator Ipso, claiming the headline discriminated against the women because of their gender.
