From daily The Independent in Britain today:
Jo Cox shooting: Eyewitnesses describe moment Labour MP shot outside constituency office
Eyewitnesses have described the moment Labour MP Jo Cox was shot outside her constituency office in Birstall.
Ms Cox is believed to be a in a “critical condition” and has been airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary. The Labour MP was shot while holding an advice surgery for her constituents.
A Labour spokesperson said: “We’re aware of the incident that happened this afternoon. All our thoughts are with Jo Cox and her family. We cannot give any further updates at this time.”
Earlier reports claimed a witness had said the attacker shouted “Britain first” and walked very slowly away from the scene after the attack.
“Britain First” today is the name of an Islamophobic neonazi political party. In the 1930s, it was the slogan of Sir Oswald Mosley‘s British Union of Fascists and National Socialists, Adolf Hitler‘s allies in the United Kingdom.
Aamir Tahir, of the Dry Clean Centre, said the gunman was heard shouting “Britain first“. He said: “Apparently the guy who did it shouted ‘Britain first‘ and if I had been there I would have tackled him.”
Update from The Independent:
A witness has told the Guardian he heard the attacker shout “Britain First” not just before the shooting, but also during the arrest.
Graeme Howard, 38, lives nearby in Bond Street.
He said: “I heard the shot and I ran outside and saw some ladies from the cafe running out with towels,” he said. “There was loads of screaming and shouting and the police officers showed up.
“He was shouting Britain First when he was doing it and being arrested. He was pinned down by two police officers and she was taken away in an ambulance.”
Police say a 52-year-old man has been arrested: here.
