Israeli ex-spy chief opposes Iran attack

Israel‘s warmongering Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was left fuming at the weekend after a former senior intelligence official publicly opposed his policy of a military strike on Iran and accused his government of failing to actively pursue peace with Palestinians.
Ex-Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin said that the plan being pushed by the Prime Minister and his Defence Minister Ehud Barak risked speeding up any Iranian nuclear programme.
Mr Diskin, who served as the head of the internal intelligence agency until last year, told a public meeting on Friday: “I don’t have faith in the current leadership of Israel.”
He added that “one of the results of an Israel attack on Iran could be a dramatic acceleration of the Iran programme.
“They will have legitimacy to do it more quickly and in a shorter timeframe.”
Iran says that its nuclear development programme is aimed only at meeting its energy needs.
However the Israeli right has been sabre-rattling for months over the prospects that Tehran is developing a bomb.
But last week Israel’s military chief Benny Gantz also said he believed that sanctions would be more effective than strikes in convincing Iran not to develop nuclear weapons.

Former Mossad chief Meir Dagan on Sunday gave his support to former Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) director Yuval Diskin, who said Friday that he has no confidence in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak abilities to conduct a war.
Speaking on the sidelines of The Jerusalem Post Conference in New York, Dagan said Diskin was speaking his “internal truth” and called him a good friend and a serious person.
On Friday, Diskin said Barak and Netanyahu are guided by “messianic” impulses and are lying about the projected effectiveness of an Israeli strike on Iran.

Israeli official: Rockets fired toward Israel were smuggled from Libya after Gadhafi’s fall

An Israeli defense official says rockets fired from Egypt toward Israel this month were smuggled from Libya.
Israel says at least two rockets were launched from Egypt’s Sinai desert at the Israeli resort town of Eilat. No one was hurt. Egypt denies the rockets were fired from its territory.
Libya has become an illicit source of weapons since the fall of dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year.
The Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity according to military regulations, says Israel believes the rockets were stolen from a Libyan weapons storehouse and smuggled into Egypt.
The official said Friday that Libyan rockets were also smuggled into the Gaza Strip and were launched into Israel this month.
Israel also believes longer-range Scud missiles were smuggled from Libya to Gaza, the official said.

Indeed time is running out for the Israelis. In the war of the Abrahamic religions, Israel is a sitting duck, without the support of the big brother United States. In fact it would not take much to unite the collective hatred of the Arabic peninsula, with its over powering demographic majority, against the Jewish state. And who would be better than the radical state of Iran to infuriate this collective opinion!
Hence the urgency by the Israeli leadership to thwart the long term Iran and Arab world threat. Before the economic woes of America become so gargantuan that there is a shift in America’s foreign policy, the Israelis want to neutralize the threat of annihilation that they face under the Iranian leadership.
The obvious policy is to use the impending US elections to rally opinion and action against Iran. Obama is not as much a war monger as his predecessors have been and this works against Israeli strategic policy. Hence the bellicose demeanor to bomb the Iranians.
IMO, the inclination to war is higher than peace as despite ironically overwhelming intelligence reports suggesting no great ambitions on the part of Iran and that too from US and Israeli agencies itself, Israel is all set to go the extra mile.
In my blog I have tried to address this delicate geo political issue keeping in mind the escalation of teh crisi and how it impacts the world’s nations.

“Israel is all set to go the extra mile” [to war]. Not Israel as a whole, as most people in Israel don’t want war. Just the Rightist Netanyahu administration, severely shaken by mass protests against its economic policies.

Arafat was the man who was able to make peace with Israel, willing to do so, and to get his people, including the Islamists, to accept it. This would have put an end to the settlement enterprise. That?s why he was poisoned.
