The number of Afghan women committing suicide by setting fire to themselves has doubled since last year.

Officials say they are trying to escape difficult lives.

Ancil Adrian-Paul, a spokeswoman for NGO Medica Mondiale, told the BBC, “These are young girls at their most productive ages – between nine and 40 years of age.”

Cases of such suicide are reported everyday in the city of Herat and 36 cases have been reported so far this year in Kabul.

To paraphrase The Who: Meet the new Afghanistan, twice as bad as even the old Afghanistan.
