Map butterfly in winter because of Christmas tree

Extremely early map butterfly

On Friday, January 3, Marcel Kok in Heiloo found a map butterfly. This is a very early discovery, because normally map butterflies appear only in the course of April.

It is tempting to ascribe this to the very mild winter but this is different. The butterfly was found indoors and did not emerged in “natural” conditions . Most likely, the pupa was stuck to the Christmas tree which Marcel had in his living room. A few weeks of high temperatures confused the butterfly, making it metamorphose indoors.
