Dutch disagreement with Trump on Venezuela

This 19 February 2019 video from the USA says about itself:

President Trump called for regime change in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua on Monday, in a major speech urging the Venezuelan military to abandon its support for President Nicolás Maduro and to support self-proclaimed Venezuelan president Juan Guaidó. During the speech, Trump said the U.S. seeks a peaceful transition of power in Venezuela, but that all options remain on the table.

This comes as a new book out by former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe reveals Trump privately discussed going to war with Venezuela in 2017. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro responded to Trump’s speech in Miami by accusing him of engaging in Nazi-like discourse.

We speak with Venezuelan economist Francisco Rodríguez, who headed the Venezuelan National Assembly’s Economic and Financial Advisory Office under Hugo Chávez. We also speak with Vijay Prashad, director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and chief editor of LeftWord Books. He is the author of several books, including “The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South.”

Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:

Parliament: Kingdom of the Netherlands should not be sucked into military conflict in Venezuela

Major concerns in the Lower House about the consequences of the escalating crisis in Venezuela for Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. The government must “dp everything in its power” to prevent the Kingdom from “being drawn into a military conflict”.

That say, eg, [government parties] D66, VVD, [opposition parties] GroenLinks and Socialist Party. The parties believe that the Netherlands should make it clear that humanitarian aid is being provided and that it does not want to be involved in a military intervention. According to GroenLinks, the Netherlands should therefore not “be too much on the side of the US Americans”.

US President Trump does not exclude a [military] intervention in Venezuela. …

Venezuela is the largest neighbor of our Kingdom, according to a concerned parliament. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are near: Aruba even 30 kilometers away. The MPs believe that our country should not politicize the situation, like the US Americans do.

The European Union on Monday (Feb 25) urged countries to avoid any military intervention in Venezuela. “We must avoid a military intervention,” Maja Kocijancic, the spokeswoman for diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini, told reporters: here.

This weekend’s attempt by the US to deliver “humanitarian aid” to Venezuela was a staged provocation, with flatbed trucks serving as US imperialism’s modern equivalent of the Trojan horse: here.

  1. Danger of U.S. Military Intervention in Venezuela Grows

February 23 will be a decisive day of struggle in Venezuela and around the world – 100+ cities plan actions

*Please share widely across lists, networks, and on social media*

The stakes could not be higher as people across the globe prepare to mobilize in solidarity with the Venezuelan people on February 23 and to oppose the growing imperialist threats of intervention and war. More than 100 cities plan to hold actions this weekend – find and join one near you.

February 23 will be a decisive juncture and a day marked by struggle to defend Venezuela both inside the country and around the world.

Massive demonstrations in Venezuela have shown that the majority of the people support Maduro and the Bolivarian Revolution. As it becomes clearer each day that the coup attempt has failed and lacks popular support, the desperation of the opposition and the imperialist forces that are their primary source of support grows. This is demonstrated by the increasingly hostile statements made in recent days by U.S. President Donald Trump, Senator Marco Rubio, U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton, U.S. envoy Elliot Abrams, and others who are determined to reopen Venezuela’s vast oil and natural wealth to plunder by Wall Street.

The corporate media is working overtime to build the case for more deadly sanctions and direct military intervention. The “Venezuela Live-Aid” planned for Friday evening on the Colombia-Venezuela border by English billionaire Richard Branson is a critical piece of the war propaganda blitz that every major newspaper and TV station is readily pushing forward. In Venezuela, a Hands Off Venezuela concert is planned for the Venezuelan side of the border that same evening, and more popular mobilizations are planned throughout the country during the weekend.

Our international solidarity movement must be on full alerts, and redouble our efforts to build strong actions this weekend, while also preparing to quickly mobilize in the days and weeks that follow.

ALL OUT FEBRUARY 23! NO WAR FOR OIL!

More than 100 cities are planning actions in the coming days. There are many actions that we are hearing about but do not yet have concrete information on, or others that are being organized now given the urgent situation facing Venezuela – be sure to check the site for the most up to date list to find an action near you.

A major press conference took place on Wednesday in New York City outside Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer’s office, announcing the tremendous worldwide day of solidarity planned on February 23 – watch video of the press conference here.

Here are a few things that we’ve prepared to assist with preparations for this weekend’s activities:

Wear Red in solidarity with Venezuela! Supporters of the Bolivarian Revolution often wear red at demonstrations in Venezuela, and this will help to strengthen our internationally coordinated show of solidarity
Gather petition signatures: The Venezuelan people and their supporters across the world have been gathering signatures on President Nicolás Maduro’s “Open Letter to the People of the United States.” We’ve included this letter on the site along with a sheet to gather petition signatures at February 23 actions and for outreach in your community.
Find placards, informational leaflets, and other materials for use at local actions: Visit the Resources page of the website to find new placards that can be used at your demonstration, along with many other materials to help cut through the fabrications being promoted in the corporate media about Venezuela.
Send in photos, videos, and use #23Feb and #HandsOffVenezuela on social media! Please send photos, videos, and any short reports or other information on the activities you hold or see that are taking place this weekend to info@nowaronvenezuela.org. Be sure to share updates of your event on social media with the hashtags #23Feb and #HandsOffVenezuela, and tag us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Please consider making a donation to support the organizing for the global day of action on February 23 to say: No War on Venezuela! Every mobilization has many costs in web sites, social media, signs, banners, printing and producing materials, and more. Help us keep building the struggle against US War On Venezuela!

In South Florida, we have a particular obligation to stand against US interference in Venezuela. Miami is home to US Southern Command in Doral, FL– the base for all US military operations in Latin America, particularly Venezuela at the moment. US SOUTHCOM is a nefarious entity whose track-record includes toppling governments throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean, propping up right-wing governments and dictators, arming death-squads throughout the hemisphere, and committing troops to countries within the region.
