Naomi Klein: By Not Holding Climate Debate, DNC Fails to Grasp “Intersectional Nature of the Crisis

Renowned activist and author Naomi Klein evaluates the 2020 Democratic presidential field and the climate platforms of leading candidates. She says the Democratic National Committee’s refusal to hold a debate specifically on the climate crisis reveals “a fundamental failure to understand the intersectional nature of this crisis,” making it crucial for the candidates to be vocal about their plans.

“If you say you support a Green New Deal … then you can’t wait for the moderator to ask you specifically about climate change. This is your economic plan, this is related to what your foreign policy is, this is related to your racial justice platform,” Klein says. “This is really the story of the next economy, so the candidates need to seize the reins.”

  1. For decades, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) never once had a contested internal election. Throughout those years, DNC members were largely reduced to cardboard props — existing to listen to speeches, clap, and then vote as the Democratic establishment saw fit.

But Bernie Sanders changed all of that. His 2016 campaign launched a progressive movement that in just three years has already transformed the Democratic Party.

Since Our Revolution began, we’ve had a contested election for every single DNC office — beginning with Keith Ellison for DNC Chair, and culminating in more than 70 progressives who are now elected members of the DNC. Together, our movement has irreversibly changed how the Democratic Party operates.

If democracy is going to survive in America, we must complete our transformation of the Democratic Party. That’s why I’m asking you directly for help. Will you donate to Our Revolution to help us continue transforming the Democratic Party by ending the influence of the corporate establishment and pushing forward with Bernie Sanders’ policy agenda?

As Our Revolution board member Jim Zogby said, none of what we’ve accomplished in the last three years would have been possible if Our Revolution hadn’t taken Bernie Sanders’ message of transformative, bottom-up change and run with it.

Today, our country’s need for transformative change has never been greater. We have an authoritarian buffoon for a president who threatens the stability of our democracy, and a planet that faces a potential mass extinction in the form of an unfolding climate crisis.

The only thing that stands in the way of both of those existential threats to our families is the progressive policy agenda that Our Revolution has worked so hard alongside Bernie Sanders to establish as the primary language of Democratic voters.

Donate now to help us defeat the power of corporate Democrats and complete the transformation of the Democratic Party into a progress-led organization that truly works for the best interests of working Americans

If you’ve stored your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will process immediately.

As the Texas legend and Our Revolution board member Jim Hightower so wisely said, “We are not here to overthrow the party; We are here to become the party — the party of the people.”

  2. On this campaign, we are not only taking on almost two dozen Democratic candidates for president and virtually the entire damn 1 percent.

It often seems like we are taking on much of the corporate media in this country — especially the news-as-entertainment set that treats politics as if it were a soap opera or a sporting event.

Those folks HATE Bernie Sanders. You’ve seen them:

“Bernie Sanders makes my skin crawl.”
    – MSNBC analyst

“If you are still supporting Sanders… it’s kind of showing your sexism.”
    – Another MSNBC analyst

“He’s a socialist from the 1950s yelling at people in the same screechy voice, without smiling.”
    – Another MSNBC analyst

“I think he comes off as mean, he’s disparaging.”
    – Another MSNBC analyst

We know it can be maddening. So we thought it worth sharing a supporter-created video on the topic that has millions of views — because you are not alone.

Watch this video — “Rising Up” — and then make a $2.70 contribution to help us take our message straight to the people.

Thank you for stepping up and helping our campaign to fight back against some of the ridiculous attacks we have to suffer that are unique to any candidate in this race. It means a lot.

    All my best,

    Faiz Shakir
    Campaign Manager
