North Carolina, USA persecution for anti-racism

This video from the USA says about itself:

Meet the College Student Who Pulled Down a Confederate Statue in Durham & Defied White Supremacy

16 August 2017

A crowd of activists toppled a Confederate statue in Durham, North Carolina, on Monday, just two days after the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. As the crowd shouted “We are the revolution,” a college student named Takiyah Thompson climbed up a ladder, looped a rope around the top of the Confederate Soldiers Monument in front of the old Durham County Courthouse and then pulled the statue to the ground.

She was arrested the following day on two charges of felony inciting a riot and three misdemeanor charges, including defacing a statue. Thompson was released last night on a $10,000 unsecured bond. We speak with Thompson about her actions before her scheduled court hearing this morning.

CRUEL & UNUSUAL:

Demand Durham Sheriff Mike Andrews end the witchhunt against anti-racist activists and be held accountable for his criminal treatment of the people of Durham!

SIGN THE PETITION NOW

Over the past two weeks, thirteen activists have been arrested and slapped with outrageous felony and misdemeanor charges for their defense of the Durham community against white supremacists, first in relation to the toppling of a Confederate statue in front of the Durham courthouse on Aug. 14, and then for protesting in response to a planned Ku Klux Klan rally on Aug. 18. Most recently, three more activists were issued warrants on Aug. 28 and turned themselves in; two were arrested the day before.

Sheriff Andrews recently attempted unsuccessfully to prosecute activists with Inside-Outside Alliance for protest charges, and was exposed for his exaggerated attempts to target demonstrators. The IOA has held weekly protests at the jail for more than a year. These arrests are clearly a form of retaliation against the movement at large.

The jail that Andrews runs is an institution committed to the preservation and perpetuation of white supremacy. Under Andrews’ tenure, at least five people – Matthew McCain, Dennis McMurray, Niecey Fennell, Terry Lee, and Raphael Bennett — have died in the Durham County Jail due to the criminal conditions inside. Detainees have described the jail as being designed to “break you” and to “make you want to kill yourself.” Andrews has gone out of his way to cover up these deaths, and has made patently false statements about the conditions of the jail. Meanwhile, he has frustrated attempts by the community and elected officials to audit the conditions there, and has lied about the Durham County Sheriff’s collaboration with Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement (ICE).

In what can be described as nothing other than cruel and unusual, Andrews has recently taken steps to completely restrict in-person visitation for Durham County jail detainees, and only allow video visitation.

We say no more!

Stop the witchhunt against activists involved in protesting white supremacy!

Drop the charges against the 13 anti-racist activists!

End the criminal treatment of the people of Durham inside the Durham County Jail!

  1. If you thought Donald Trump’s war on people of color and the climate couldn’t get any worse, think again: Trump has nominated long-time racist and climate-denying conservative talk radio hack Sam Clovis to serve as the Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) chief scientist.

Clovis is a birther conspiracy theorist who has called President Obama and his Black and Latino cabinet members “racists.” He has no policy expertise in food and agriculture or experience in hard sciences, and he believes climate science is “junk.”1,2

He is wholly unqualified to fill this position, and the Senate will be taking up a vote to confirm him soon. We must pressure members of the Senate to block and resist his nomination.

In the past, chief scientists at the USDA have been experts in food and farming, biochemistry, public health, or food nutrition. In fact, the law requires the USDA’s chief scientist be chosen “from among distinguished scientists with specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics.”3

However, Clovis’ only apparent qualifications to head this critical science post is that he lives in agriculture-heavy Iowa and is a shameless Trump supporter. Clovis is instead deeply anti-science, claiming the overwhelming evidence behind climate change is “not proven” and “junk science” and has stated that he will not prioritize climate change in the agency’s policy.4

During his time as an extreme right-wing activist and conservative radio host, Clovis frequently espoused racist conspiracy theories. In a now-deleted blog that Clovis ran, he “accused progressives of ‘enslaving’ minorities, called black leaders ‘race traders,’ and labeled former President Barack Obama a ‘Maoist’ with ‘communist’ roots.”5

In light of the recent white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, every Senate Democrat and any Senate Republican with a conscience must do everything in their power to stop Donald Trump from installing yet another unqualified racist hack in his administration.

Clovis’ nomination is not just absurd, it’s dangerous. We must act now to ensure the Senate keeps this incompetent racist from heading up USDA science policy and rejects this nomination outright.

  2. National Call to Action to Smash White Supremacy

In the wake of the violent attacks in Charlottesville by organized Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and the KKK, with complicity from the police, we are calling for organizations and individuals to join this call to smash white supremacy!

Take action between Monday, Sept. 11th and Sunday, Sept. 17th for Charlottesville, for Durham, for your own community such as rallies, marches, direct action, press conferences, teach-ins, etc.

Actions across the country have shown that now, more than ever, is the time to take bold and courageous action. We must act now to counter the rise and emboldening of white supremacists in our communities and in the state.

Tuesday, Sept. 12th is the one-month anniversary of the the murder of anti-racist protester Heather Heyer. It is also the court date for the courageous young people in Durham, N.C., who pulled down a confederate monument in their city. On September 12th, organizers are mobilizing in defense of these arrestees and the Durham community. Will you join them by coming to Durham and/or planning a solidarity action in your city?

In Durham, Sheriff Mike Andrews has been attempting to intimidate the movement at large by targeting activists allegedly involved in toppling the statue on Aug. 14, and others involved in protesting at a planned Ku Klux Klan rally on Aug. 18. Andrews has been targeted by activists for allowing horrible conditions to continue at the Durham County Jail, where at least five people have died as a result and where, in the most recent outrage, prisoners are only allowed visits from their loved ones via video; and for his department’s collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The struggle against white supremacy in all its forms is just! The events in Charlottesville, followed by the action in Durham that toppled the Confederate monument, are part of a growing movement to combat some of the most heinous, racist sections of far right that have been emboldened by Trump. In response, cities across the country have preemptively taken down Confederate monuments — not because these politicians want to “do the right thing,” but because they fear rebellion and the strength of a united, multinational movement.

In spite of this, Trump’s bellicose attacks on our movement have continued — including the egregious pardoning of arch-racist Sheriff Joe Arpaio — providing an opening for the witchhunt by the Durham sheriff against anti-racist activists and for attacks from the far right. The days of action from September 11-17, both in Durham and around the country, will continue the march forward to tear down white supremacy.
