CHILE’S indigenous Mapuche people are braced for a crackdown after conservative presidential hopeful Sebastian Pinera led in Sunday’s first-round election.
The billionaire Let’s Go Chile candidate won almost 37 per cent of the vote compared to 23 per cent for Senator Alejandro Guillier who is backed by current president Michelle Bachelet’s New Majority coalition.
The two will go forward to a run-off vote on December 17.
The British-based Mapuche International Link expressed concern yesterday at Mr Pinera’s pledge of greater use of anti-terrorism laws enacted by late dictator Augusto Pinochet.
Spokesman Atus Mariqueo-Russell said: “We’ve seen hunger strikes, police brutality and extended detentions without charge under Chile’s left-leaning president.
“Yet Pinera’s recent rhetoric, and his reliance upon far-right supporters, points to the likelihood that his administration will lead to an escalation of violence towards the Mapuche and other indigenous groups in Chile.”
