Hunting fallow deer is illegal in Zeeland. The province had authorized it in June, but this decision was annulled this Wednesday by the court in Breda.
Fallow deer are a protected species. In principle, they should not be hunted. Provinces are allowed to waive the hunt ban when there are so many animals that their welfare get at risk.
‘That has not been shown in this case, said the judges. The Faunabescherming Foundation had gone to court to prevent the hunting.
Zeeland should also not give permission for the hunting of gray lag geese and Canada geese. Although there are more and more birds and they cause more and more damage to agricultural crops: the hunters wanted to catch the birds with traps and cages, and these are illegal.
