BP reports bumper yield for first quarter of 2010

London – British Petroleum (BP) saw profits rise by 135 per cent to 3.6 billion pounds (5.6 billion dollars) in the first quarter of 2010, the oil company said in London Tuesday.

The doubling of profit levels compared with the same period a year ago followed a rise in crude oil prices fuelled by recovery hopes for the global economy.

BP‘s results were much higher than expert forecasts after profits in exploration and production nearly doubled to 5.36 billion pounds, the company said.

In a recent strategy update, BP said it would begin production on 42 major projects worldwide over the next five years as existing fields decline, and boost profits by taking cutting costs.
