Turkey: Thousands demonstrate against US, NATO

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Several thousand leftists staged anti-U.S. and anti-NATO protests in Turkey on Saturday, with shouts of “Yankee Go Home!” the day before President Barack Obama’s visit.

Thousands of protesters also took to the streets in Istanbul’s Kadikoy district, chanting “Yankee Go Home!” …

The demonstrators in Ankara and in Istanbul called for NATO’s disbandment as world leaders gathered for the Western alliance’s 60th anniversary summit in Strasbourg, France. Turkey is a NATO member.

Four leftists chained themselves to a bridge over the Bosporus strait in Istanbul in a related anti-NATO protest Saturday, Dogan news agency television footage showed. Police detained the protesters, who were wearing white T-shirts bearing the slogan: “Murderer NATO.”

Turkish television footage of separate protests in southeast Turkey showed hundreds of Kurdish demonstrators throwing stones at police and soldiers who were preventing around 3,000 people from going to the village of imprisoned Kurdish rebel chief Abdullah Ocalan to mark his 60th birthday.

Dogan news agency footage shows hundreds of police and soldiers, holding riot shields, taking positions on hilltops and blocking a road near the town of Halfeti, close to Ocalan’s village of Omerli.

Police and military authorities urged calm, and police used water cannons and fired tear gas to disperse the crowds, the film showed.

Ocalan is serving a life sentence for leading a separatist war in Turkey’s southeast.
