“A Racist, Xenophobic Attack”: Immigrant Rights Activist Decries Trump Remarks About Southern Border

President Donald Trump addressed the nation Tuesday night in his first prime-time speech from the Oval Office. He urged Congress to approve $5.7 billion to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, … in a xenophobic speech riddled with falsehoods. We speak with Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas, an immigrant rights group based in Chicago.

Trump’s “national emergency” threat and the danger of presidential dictatorship

10 January 2019

In the wake of President Trump’s nationally televised address Tuesday night, the political axis of the conflict over the border wall, which has led to the partial shutdown of the federal government, has clearly shifted. White House officials, including Trump himself, are openly threatening to declare a national emergency, under which Trump would assume quasi-dictatorial powers and use the US military to carry out his political objectives, including building the wall.

In any other country, such an assumption of unchecked power by the chief executive would be described as rule by decree or an outright coup d’état. But in the United States, the complacent media and the compliant “opposition” party make no warnings and offer no resistance. In their official response to Trump Tuesday night, neither House Speaker Nancy Pelosi nor Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said anything about the declaration of a national emergency, although Trump began hinting at it last week.

TRUMP STORMS OUT OF SHUTDOWN MEETING President Donald Trump said “bye bye” and walked out of a meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to discuss the continuing government shutdown. Trump posted about the meeting on Twitter, calling it a “total waste of time.” [HuffPost]

WHITE HOUSE DESPERATE TO KEEP REPUBLICANS IN LINE The White House is trying to hold congressional Republicans in line as the partial shutdown drags on. There’s growing concern inside the GOP about the toll the shutdown is taking on everyday Americans, including disruptions in payments to farmers and trouble for home buyers seeking government-backed loans. ADVICE TO FURLOUGHED WORKERS: HAVE A GARAGE SALE The Coast Guard, the only branch of the military directly affected by the shutdown, is offering financial advice to its furloughed members: Find a babysitting gig or host a garage sale. [HuffPost]

The government shutdown is piling on the stress for expectant parents. Here’s how.

TRUMP EVANGELICAL: EVEN HEAVEN HAS A WALL An evangelical preacher is using the Bible to defend Trump’s demand to build a border wall ― suggesting that heaven definitely has a wall around it. [HuffPost]

  1. Over 13,000 EPA employees are not working because of the Trump Shutdown, but Trump just nominated former dirty coal and uranium lobbyist Andrew Wheeler to be the administrator of the EPA.

From rolling back toxic coal ash safeguards to gutting the Clean Water Rule to making it so our families could be exposed to more mercury pollution, Wheeler has proved during his tenure as acting EPA administrator that he will prioritize corporate polluters over the people. In just six months, Wheeler has proved he is just as big — if not bigger — a threat to our clean air, clean water, and public health protections as Scott Pruitt was.

As a former lobbyist for Big Polluters including Murray Energy, we know that he has spent his career working against the environment. Putting Wheeler in charge of the EPA is like a fox guarding the hen house — and we can’t let it stand.

Trump thinks that the public will be too consumed with the Trump Shutdown to notice this attack on the EPA, but we need to prove him wrong. We must keep Wheeler out of the EPA — and we need supporters like you to step up now and contact your senators.

The hearing is in less than a week. Tell the Senate: Don’t let Andrew Wheeler take over the EPA »

Once a coal lobbyist, always a coal lobbyist. Wheeler has worked to pass legislation that would have dangerously delayed critical improvements to our air quality. Wheeler even questions the science behind climate change in an effort to push the agenda of his polluter industry allies. And his short tenure as EPA administrator has been nothing but attack after attack on our environmental protections. His record speaks for itself — we know who he’s really working for, and it isn’t the people of America.

We have to go after Wheeler just as hard as we went after Pruitt. After nearly 1 million people across the country — including nearly 200,000 LCV supporters like you — demanded Pruitt’s resignation, he finally stepped down. It was because of the relentless efforts by people like you that the media, our elected officials, and ultimately Pruitt himself listened. We can continue that fight now and stop our senators from putting another climate denier in charge of the EPA, but only if we keep the pressure on.

We cannot let the Senate make the same mistake it did when it confirmed Pruitt. That will only happen if enough of us contact our senators NOW and tell them to keep Wheeler from becoming the head of the EPA.

We successfully booted Pruitt. Now make sure that the next EPA administrator isn’t just as dangerous. Please, contact your senators today »

We forced Pruitt out. If we can stop Wheeler, there is a real chance that we can change the course of this administration’s attacks on the environment and our health. But we can’t let up now.

    Thank you for taking action.
