Gerald Horne says Trump‘s comments seek to disperse the culpability of white nationalists in the murder of Heather Heyer.
The anti-racist demonstration against the August 12 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, was the most frightening I have ever been to. Yes, I was in the crowd when a car—driven by a man who had been marching in uniform with a neo-Nazi group—slammed into the crowd, killing one and injuring at least 19. But that was only part of it: here.

This Thursday there will be a demonstration in Amsterdam in solidarity with anti-fascists in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. Last Saturday, a neo-nazi drove his car into an anti-fascist protest against one of the biggest ever nazi demonstrations in the US, which took place on the same day. This resulted in multiple serious injuries. 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed. Solidarity with all anti-fascists in Charlottesville, Heather’s bereaved, and with everybody affected by extreme right violence.
Last Saturday, a large group of neo-nazis, Ku Klux Klan members, various Alt-Right groups and the National Socialist Movement wanted to come together in Charlottesville under the name “Unite the Right”, in order to protest against the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, Confederate general and a symbol of racism and segregation in the US. Already on Friday night, the day before the demonstration, a large group of extreme right activists gathered in Charlottesville. Armed with shields, bats, and torches, they shouted racist chants and attacked a small group of counter-demonstrators.
The following day, the extreme-right already flooded the city in the state of Virginia hours before their planned demonstration. There was a large amount of extreme-right militia members with automatic firearms in attendance. There were also massive counter demonstrations. The day resulted in many fights, and sometime after 12:30 PM, a neo-nazi drove his car into a crowd at an anti-fascist protest resulting in several serious injuries and the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer.
We would like to express our sympathy and our anger in the streets. Anti-fascism is and will always be necessary and is always legitimate. Come on Thursday to Amsterdam, 20:00, Spui!

MOURNERS gathered in the US city of Charlottesville yesterday to honour Heather Heyer who was killed after a neonazi rammed into a crowd protesting against Saturday’s far-right march.
The morning memorial service took place at the city’s Paramount Theatre as condemnation against US President Donald Trump’s shocking response to the tragedy mounted.
On Tuesday Mr Trump enraged both Republicans and Democrats after he defended far-right protesters at the Charlottesville rally, saying they were not all neonazis and white supremamacists.
The US president told reporters that there were “some very bad people” among the “Unite the Right” protesters but added: “You also had people that were very fine people, on both sides.”
He went on to claim that the protesters were attacked with weapons by the “alt-left.”
The march opposing the removal of a statue of US general Robert E Lee was confronted by anti-fascists protests. Ms Heyer was killed and 19 others injured when a car was deliberately driven into them.
The driver James Fields, now in custody, was described by a former high school teacher as an admirer of Adolf Hitler and nazi Germany.
Mr Trump’s failure to fully condemn the white supremacists drew widespread criticism.
His fellow Republican John McCain tweeted: “There is no moral equivalency between racists & Americans standing up to defy hate & bigotry [sic],” while the president’s election rival Marco Rubio said: “Mr President, you can’t allow #WhiteSupremacists to share only part of blame [sic]. They support idea which cost nation & world so much pain.”
At the tense press conference Mr Trump also defended members of the march who wanted the statue to stay put.
“So, this week it’s Robert E Lee,” he said. “I wonder,‘is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?” The president’s off-script rant was also slammed by Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock. She said: “The Holocaust did not start with the gas chambers, it started with words, with hate-filled rhetoric. “To therefore see neonazi, racist and anti-semitic symbols and language used in Charlottesville should shock and horrify all of us. “There is no moral equivalency between racists and Americans standing up to defy hate and bigotry.”

We have a president who insists on siding with white supremacists. He will not denounce those with hate in their heart who murdered a young woman for supporting equality. For so many of us, we are now living in a nightmare. It is unconscionable to compare those who fight for equality with those who believe that the color of one’s skin determines superiority.
As I said recently, my heart is skipping beats to think about all that my fore-parents endured to get to this point in time in America’s history. And to have, in the 21st century, the president of the United States not boldly stand up and denounce racial violence is atrocious. Not only does he refuse to condemn the actions of people who would protest the funeral of someone they murdered, but he also dares to try and equivocate the actions of liberal protesters, the so called “alt-left,” with those of Nazis and white supremacists. It is a disgusting false equivalency.
There is no such thing as the “alt-left.” Those who believe Medicare should be available to all Americans are not the same as Nazis. Those who believe that we must fix a broken criminal justice system that is unfair to black, brown and poor are not the same as Nazis. Those who think we should remove statues that were erected as a reminder of white supremacy are not the same as Nazis.
What happens next is crucial for the future of our country. We must stand united for a better life for all, regardless of color, gender, sexual orientation, religion or class. It has never been more clear what the differences between the two sides are. There is the side of justice and the side of injustice. It is obvious what side Trump is on. There are more of us standing on the side of justice and together we will overcome the forces seeking to regress our nation. Our stories are our strength share yours with us.
