Performers stage theatrical protest in British Museum

PROTESTERS gatecrashed the British Museum dressed as executives from banks responsible for funding the hated Dakota Access oil pipeline (DAPL), which threatens the water supply of a Native American tribe.

Activists from BP or not BP? constructed a replica pipeline inside the museum’s Great Court on Saturday to draw attention to the campaign to “defund” the project, which was approved by US President Donald Trump in February.

The demonstrators then attempted to install the pipeline in the museum’s North America gallery but were stopped by security.

The British Museum, sponsored by DAPL funders Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan Chase, has faced growing criticism for its connection with oil giant BP after it was revealed that its new sponsorship deal was not discussed by its trustees.

One of the performers, Olivia Marlowe, said: “Indigenous peoples have been opposing this pipeline ever since it was announced, through peaceful protest, legal action and, now, by calling for banks to pull out of funding the project.

“We’re supporting the defund DAPL campaign which is in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.

“It’s particularly disgraceful that JP Morgan Chase is sponsoring indigenous North Americans’ artefacts in this museum while funding a project that threatens indigenous people’s lands, in the face of huge opposition to the pipeline.”

Last week, ING bank sold its stake in the loan financing the pipeline after meeting with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, who explained how the route of the pipeline threatens their water supply and violates their treaty rights.
