Greenpeace intro at NoDAPL event against ING [bank] funding DAPL
1 December 2016
Event to protest against funding the DAPL pipeline at ING bank headquarters, Bijlmer Arena, Amsterdam.
Translated from Dutch Vroege Vogels radio:
Friday, February 17, 2017
A meters-long oil pipeline in front of the ING headquarters in Amsterdam Southeast. Greenpeace put the pipeline there as a protest against the ING loan to the construction of the highly controversial Dakota Access oil pipeline in the United States. …
The Sioux fear the leaking of oil into their drinking water. Oil spills in the United States are the order of the day. In 2016, leaking pipelines caused more than two hundred times massive pollution and degradation of nature.
President Obama suspended the construction of the pipeline at the end of 2016 in order to explore alternative routes. President Trump started the construction yet again last month, without consulting the population or further research into the effects of inevitable oil spills.
The protesters against the pipeline call themselves “water protectors” because the drinking water of millions of Americans is in danger in their eyes. The more than 1,200 activists have been told to leave their camp before 22 February, otherwise the camp will be cleared, the Republican governor Doug Burgum said.
ING
In addition to investing in the Dakota Access pipeline, ING also puts its money in other fossil fuel projects and companies. Thus, the bank has invested in, eg, the construction of a coal power plant in Indonesia. ING says that they are trying hard for a solution to annul the Dakota contract, but so far the investment of $ 120 million remains in the pipeline and a credit of $ 128 million for the construction consortium is still there.
