US: Flint officials charged over mass lead poisonings

Wednesday 21st December 2016

STATE officials who presided over the mass lead poisoning of US citizens in Flint, Michigan, were charged yesterday with crimes that could see them locked away for up to 46 years.

But most of the prison time faced by “emergency managers” Darnell Early and Gerald Ambrose, if convicted, results from dodgy dealing to obtain money to build a water pipeline.

The charges related to risking residents’ health — including lying about the water’s safety — amount to just six years.

The two emergency managers were Michigan state officials who took over Flint after 2012 when Governor Rick Snyder forced out the city’s democratically elected council.

To save money, they stopped paying nearby Detroit to supply water and started taking it out of the River Flint.

The river water was so corrosive, it stripped lead from pipes. There is no safe level of lead exposure and the substance can cause brain damage.

Tens of thousands of people, including 12,000 children, drank the dirty water and 10 died of legionnaires’ disease.

At a Tuesday morning press conference in Flint, Michigan’s attorney general Bill Schuette announced criminal charges against two former state-appointed Flint emergency managers and two ex-City of Flint officials for their roles in precipitating the water crisis: here.
