This is a purple heron video, recorded in Spain.
The Dutch SOVON ornithologists reported this week about the 2016 purple heron breeding season.
Very probably, 2016 was a record year for purple herons in the Netherlands: 947 breeding couples counted in about 30 nesting colonies.
The three biggest colonies are at Kinderdijk (216 nests), the Zouweboezem near Ameide (209) and the Nieuwkoopse Plassen (133). Near these colonies live many weatherfish, the main food of purple herons.
