ITALIAN playwright Dario Fo, whose energetic mocking of his country’s political life, social mores and religion won him praise, scorn and the Nobel prize for literature, died yesterday morning at the age of 90.
He died in Milan’s Luigi Sacco hospital after suffering respiratory complications from a pulmonary disease.
Hospital consultant Dr Delfino Luigi Legnani said the veteran writer had been working on a new stage production with collaborators in his hospital room up until his final days.
Mr Fo’s most famous work, Accidental Death of an Anarchist, was based on the fall from a police station window of a suspect who was being questioned over a 1969 Milan bank bombing.
