After the debate about the role of the blackface character Zwarte Piet (black Peter) in the Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) holiday in the Netherlands … and after the blackface scandal of another Belgian government minister …
Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands:
Criticism of Zwarte Piet photo of Belgian minister
There is criticism in Belgium of the Flemish Minister of Culture. Yesterday, when Sinterklaas was celebrated in Belgium, he put a picture of himself dressed as Zwarte Piet on Twitter.
“And we sing and we jump and we are so happy, because there are no naughty children here,”
words from a Sinterklaas holiday song
wrote Sven Gatz as caption of the picture, in which people could see him with his face painted black, complete with frizzy hair, red lips and Zwarte Piet cap.
“I do not understand this,” said Van Bellingen, director of the Minorities Forum, in the newspaper De Morgen. “Globally, there is criticism of the Zwarte Piet character. That Gatz does this as minister of culture is completely inappropriate and tasteless.”
Mr Gatz is a member of Open VLD, the most pro capitalist ‘free market’ party in Flanders. Its sister party in French speaking Belgium is the MR party; the party of the other minister in the other blackface incident.
