“I do not understand this,” said Van Bellingen, director of the Minorities Forum, in the newspaper De Morgen. “Globally, there is criticism of the Zwarte Piet character. That Gatz does this as minister of culture is completely inappropriate and tasteless.”
Mr Gatz is a member of Open VLD, the most pro capitalist ‘free market’ party in Flanders. Its sister party in French speaking Belgium is the MR party; the party of the other minister in the other blackface incident.

Waarom Zwarte Piet makkelijker verdwijnt uit Vlaanderen
In Vlaanderen wordt Zwarte Piet volgend jaar volledig afgeschaft. Iets dat in Nederland maar niet wil lukken, wordt in Vlaanderen gewoon gedáán. En, wat misschien het frappantste is: zonder dat er zo’n enorm oplopende strijd om gevoerd is (weliswaar voerde men ook in België actie tegen Zwarte Piet, maar veel minder intensief en frequent dan in Nederland). Blackface in Duinkerken, of “hoe de waarden om te draaien” tijdens carnaval
Tijdens het carnaval in het Noord-Franse Duinkerken is er al vijftig jaar een speciaal groot evenement: de “Nuit des Noirs”, de Nacht van de Zwarten, waarbij witte feestvierders in blackface en met pruiken, rieten rokjes en kettingen van botjes meelopen. Dit jaar is er protest van onder andere de Brigade anti-négrophobie (Ban). Burgemeester Patrice Vergriete is boos dat het feest racistisch genoemd wordt en zegt: “Tijdens carnaval maken we van alles en iedereen een karikatuur, we bespotten elkaar”.
