14 February 2012. This photograph was taken near Kartong Bird Observatory in the Gambia.
It depicts a malachite kingfisher.
Of the nine kingfisher species in the Gambia, seven are bigger than the malachite. Only the pygmy kingfisher is still smaller.
The malachite kingfisher is also smaller than the Eurasian kingfisher.
