Barbara Ehrenreich: How Positive Thinking Undermines America
Journalist Barbara Ehrenreich discusses her book “Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America,” presented by Harvard Book Store.
This talk was taped on October 15, 2009.
United States feminist Barbara Ehrenreich wrote a book called Bright-sided. How Positive Thinking is Undermining America.
It is about people who are not 100% happy all of the time, but are pressured to fake being happy by “positive thinking” ideologies derived from “New Age” esotericism and some forms of US “evangelical” Christianity, rampant in corporate cultures like at McDonald’s, and in society at large.

Summary of story from Metro, 24.2.11.
Workers who fake-smile could be worsening their moods and cutting productivity, according to a study by the Michigan State University.
The US study, published in the Academy of Management Journal, says that those who work face-to-face with the public could be causing more harm than good with forced grins.
Academics also found that women can be more affected by faking a smile than men.
The results go against the employers who encourage their staff to always appear happy in order to boost the success of an organisation.
Lead researcher Professor Brent Scott said: ”Smiling for the sake of smiling can lead to emotional exhaustion and withdrawal and that’s bad for the organisation.”
