US warplane kills New Zealand soldier in Afghanistan

This video from New Zealand says about itself:

Global Peace and Justice Auckland held a peaceful demonstration outside the Papakura army barracks of the NZ SAS between 12:00 and 2:00pm today. Chanting protesters called for the National-Act government to pull the SAS and all NZ military personel out of Afghanistan, and devote the army deployment funding to civilian rebuilding programmes.

Army staff videod demonstrators, and police maintained a patrol line along the barracks boundary, and patrol cars at each end of Grove Rd, which the barracks are on. 52 protesters received vocal support from locals, with most passing cars cheering or tooting and waving, in stark contrast to the obscenities from a woman leaving the army base.

Speakers compared the unjust slaughter in Afghanistan to the illegal wars of occupation in Vietnam and Iraq, and noted the impact these deployments had on Afghans, and the soldiers later in life.

From Radio New Zealand today:

New Zealander killed in Afghanistanfriendly fire

A New Zealander serving with the British Army has been killed in Afghanistan, apparently when a United States aircraft mistakenly fired on friendly forces.

He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and had been on patrol in the Nad ‘Ali district of Helmand province, in the south-west of the country.

In a statement, Britain’s Ministry of Defence says the soldier was shot and died from his wounds on Sunday.

  1. Stryker soldier skips hearing, will have court-martial

A Stryker soldier facing charges that he assaulted a private who blew the whistle on drug use in their platoon during a deployment to Afghanistan this year chose to skip a pretrial hearing scheduled for Monday and move directly to a court-martial.

Spc. Corey Moore of Redondo Beach, Calif., is one of a dozen soldiers in the 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division who await proceedings at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for alleged misconduct in southern Afghanistan. Five of them stand accused of murdering civilians.

Moore could have used his Article 32 hearing to gather evidence for his defense. At least two of his co-defendants have elected to waive their Article 32 hearings as well. They’re focusing on negotiating plea deals with Army prosecutors.

Last week prosecutors secured a deal that requires the whistleblower, Pfc. Justin Stoner, to take the witness stand. His testimony leaves little ambiguity in the assault charges against Moore, as shown last week when Stoner testified at an Article 32 hearing for Spc. Adam Kelly.

In sworn statements he gave to investigators in May, Stoner described Moore as part of an inner circle around Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, who allegedly plotted to kill Afghan civilians in combat-like scenarios. That suggests Moore might have information that could help him if he seeks a plea deal.

Moore also is accused of stabbing a corpse the platoon found when soldiers investigated the scene of an Apache helicopter strike.

No court-martial date has been scheduled for Moore, nor for co-defendant Spc. Adam Winfield. Staff Sgt. Robert G. Stevens faced a military judge for his court-martial last week.

  2. Afghanistan dominate refugee arrivals in Australia

    Last Updated(Beijing Time):2010-12-06 15:26

Australian Federal Government on Monday said nearly half the asylum seekers who arrived by boat in Australia this year came from Afghanistan.

Federal Government figures on Monday showed that more than 6, 100 people so far have arrived in Australian water this year. Amongst those, 2,800 were from Afghanistan and more than 1,100 were from Iran.

The recent increase in the number of boat arrivals means immigration authorities are now holding nearly 6,000 people in immigration detentions in Australia, including 742 children.
