Fallen evangelical pastor Haggard faces claims he had relationship with ex-church volunteer

By ERIC GORSKI
AP Religion Writer

DENVER — Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard‘s former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard – a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.

Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.

Boyd said an “overwhelming pool of evidence” pointed to an “inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship” that “went on for a long period of time … it wasn’t a one-time act.” Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began.

Reached Friday night, Haggard declined to comment and said all interviews would have to be arranged through a publicist for HBO, which is airing a documentary about him this month.

This Saturday and Sunday evening, 24 January and 25 January, or Tuesday evening, January 27, the Lifetime cable channel premieres the long awaited film version of the best selling book by Leroy Aarons, Prayers for Bobby. Sigourney Weaver plays Bobby’s Mother, Mary Griffith and Ryan Kelley plays Bobby.

We want to take this opportunity to encourage you to gather with family, friends and circles of influence in your neighborhood, church and local community to watch this moving and powerful film together.

If you have opportunity to create space and share time with local youth groups, campus ministries and seminary community to watch this film, it will be well worth the effort. We also encourage you find your story amidst Bobby’s story and write about, preach about it, blog about it.

The story of Bobby Griffith’s struggle with being gay in concert with trying to live a Christian life ended on Aug. 27, 1983. On that day, the world changed as the twenty-year-old California man did a back flip off of a freeway overpass in Portland, OR and being struck and killed by an oncoming tractor-trailer.

The four years before his death, his religious mother encouraged him to “cure” his homosexuality through the spiritual practice of prayer. During this time, Bobby also kept an extensive diary, which chronicles the ebbs and flows of his existence.

This made for TV movie is based on the HarperCollins book Prayers for Bobby written by Leroy Aarons and it chronicles Bobby’s struggles and torments as he grapples with his sexuality and how his death became the catalyst for his mother Mary. Following her son’s death by suicide, Mary blamed herself an action that took her on a journey of self revelation to understanding, redemption and transformation. Since then, she has become an advocate for gay teens and spokeswoman for the Diablo Valley Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

Earlier this week in a San Francisco Chronicle article about this film, Mary Griffith, now 74, said, “I didn’t listen to my conscience. I was entrenched. But I don’t live with the guilt anymore because I realized that I was truly ignorant. It wasn’t something I did out of malice. So, I can forgive myself for that.”

It is our hope and prayer that our collective efforts will bring about an end to the questioning, fear, pain and shame that is experienced by LGBT youth around the world who doubt they too are made in the image of a loving God who cares for them just as they are.

As you gather together to watch this film, gather in the hope that lives will be transformed, doors will be opened, and relationships between youth and parents will be healed.

Mary paid a high price in the loss of her son, Bobby, because of the fear and homophobia of our world. May we become the light of hope and peace that brings people, families and communities together to tear down walls and build up hope.
