For millennia, indigenous communities, including the Havasupai, Hualapai, Hopi, and Navajo Nation communities, have lived in and around the Grand Canyon. Any move to expand uranium mining within the Grand Canyon would risk destroying these sacred lands and exposing the water supply of indigenous communities to toxic uranium pollution.
This is how we stop it: Environmental champion and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rep. Grijalva has introduced the Grand Canyon Centennial Protection Act (H.R. 1373) that will protect 1 million acres of land around the Canyon from uranium mining. To get this bill over the finish line, LCV supporters like you must support the indigenous communities leading this fight and make sure your representative knows just how important this fight is. Indigenous communities throughout the region are already dealing with the impacts of existing uranium mining near the Grand Canyon. Uranium mining can increase toxic radiation levels that lead to lung and bone cancers, and a host of issues for the ecosystems nearby. Allowing more mining would exacerbate the risks to water, public health, and sacred lands.
Make no mistake: Opening the Grand Canyon to Big Polluters — just like gutting protections for Bears Ears National Monument and ignoring the concerns of indigenous communities for the Keystone XL pipeline — is yet another example of the Trump administration’s disregard for indigenous rights and sovereignty.
Uranium mining in the Grand Canyon would cause immense damage that we could never reverse. For years we’ve fought to keep Big Polluters out of the Grand Canyon — and now supporting the Grand Canyon Centennial Protection Act is the best thing we can do to protect this iconic space once again.
