A historic day – the end of American mediation in the Middle East

The Trump speech will not change the reality of Jerusalem. West Jerusalem will remain an Israeli city, where Israel’s government is located since 1949. East Jerusalem will remain an occupied Palestinian city, which is not and cannot be a part of Israel. Believers of Judaism, Christianity and Islam will continue clinging to their holy sites in Jerusalem.
Nevertheless, this is a historic day. In the person of President Donald Trump, the United States today officially, ceremoniously and with a bang abdicated its role as the mediator between Israel and the Arabs.
This mediating role had endured for more than forty years. Henry Kissinger created it with his “shuttle diplomacy” of the 1970’s. All later Presidents and Secretaries of State strove to maintain it. All later Presidents and Secretaries of State were jealous of the American monopoly over Middle East mediation, even to forcibly grabbing hold of negotiations processes started without them – between Israel and Egypt in 1978, between Israel and the Palestinians in 1993. Until Donald Trump came along and in typical Trumpian style decided to spectacularly smash up this mediation role.
In fact, the US mediation role had always been a curious anomaly. In no commercial dispute would it be conceivable to have as arbiter the business partner of one of the contending parties. But in the world of Middle East diplomacy, it was accepted almost without question that the role of impartial honest broker be given to Israel’s closest ally, the provider of billions in financial aid and state of the art weapons systems and an almost automatic veto in the UN Security Council.
Obama and Kerry did make some belated and half-hearted efforts to appear impartial. But Trump decided to tear off America’s face any mask of impartiality and trample it underfoot.
What now? Well, for some time there will be no mediator in the Middle East, and hence no kind of Peace Process. But sooner or later, the vacuum is going to be filled. Who might fill it? One name which comes to mind is of Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who had just shown himself able to play a highly effective and energetic – though quite brutal – role in Syria. Russia has long-standing cordial relations with the Palestinians, in the past decade Putin has built up intensive relations with Netanyahu as well. Taking up the abandoned mediation role between Israel and the Palestinians would fit nicely within Putin’s project of restoring Russia’s global power.
Then, the European Union – even though beset by many crises – might take up a more assertive role in the Middle East. Especially France, which has traditionally tended to take its own independent initiatives. Or even China, which not so long ago appointed its own Middle East representative.
Altogether, there might eventually emerge a mediator or mediators who would be a bit more impartial than we had so far. And if so, there might be an ironical reason to feel grateful to Donald Trump…

But PM fails to condemn US for incendiary Jerusalem ploy
THERESA MAY promised yesterday that Britain will not follow the US’s lead in recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel after she was urged to condemn President Donald Trump’s potentially devastating decision.
Mr Trump declared the start of the process to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city during a formal speech in the White House yesterday.
This was after he missed a deadline yesterday morning for signing a waiver to keep the embassy in Tel Aviv.
The US president has pressed ahead with the move despite warnings that it would diminish any prospect of peace in the region and put US embassies in a number of Arab countries in danger.
The decision, which upends seven decades of US foreign policy, has also sparked fears of violent protests by Palestinians who see Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry said Mr Trump’s actions are “a breathtakingly dangerous move.”
She added: “With one unthinking sweep of his pen, Donald Trump has abandoned America’s role as a peace-broker between the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships and done serious damage to his country’s relationship with other regional powers.
“I have called on the British government today both to condemn Donald Trump unequivocally for that recklessness and also work immediately with our other allies to try and fill the mediation role that he has deserted today.”
Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) chair Hugh Lanning said the move “would represent a dangerous disregard for international law.”
“We call on the UK government to make clear that it respects international law and will not support any moves that violate the law and the rights and claims of the Palestinian people,” he said.
The PM said Britain would not alter its position that Jerusalem should eventually form a shared capital for Israelis and Palestinians under a two-state solution.
Asked during Prime Minister’s Questions whether she had been consulted on the move by the US president, Ms May said: “I’m intending to speak to President Trump about this matter, but our position has not changed.”
An emergency Hands Off Jerusalem demonstration will be held tomorrow outside the US embassy in London from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Protest organisers PSC, Palestinian Forum in Britain, Friends of Al Aqsa, Stop the War Coalition and Muslim Association of Britain repeated calls for Ms May to cancel any state visit to Britain by Mr Trump.

Jerusalem is the home of both Jews and Palestinians – and must be recognized as home to both peoples. Moving the embassy plays into the hands of right-wing extremists and the Israeli government’s attempts to erase Palestinian ties and claims to the city. This will only add bloodshed and entrench the occupation!
The takes place happen only 24 hours after Jerusalem Day, during which thousands of Israelis marched through Palestinian East Jerusalem and the Muslim Quarter of the Old City shouted racist and hateful slogans. It takes place as Israeli snipers on the Gaza border go on shooting and killing dozens of Palestinian demonstrators.
Instead of condemning these actions – the Trump administration has once again aligned itself with the most right-wing government in Israel’s history, and undermined the last shred of Palestinian trust in the U.S.
We cannot stay silent. Let’s stand together against with a message of hope and solidarity.
