Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands:
Coins treasure found in Rotterdam
Update: Friday, February 22, 2013, 13:30
In Rotterdam, archaeologists have found nearly 500 silver coins dating from the sixteenth century. They were inside a shoe and were discovered at the construction site of the former municipal office. Mayor Aboutaleb revealed the discovery during a visit to the construction site.
The oldest coin is from 1472. Most of the coins are from the Netherlands, but there are also Spanish and English ones. Then, the coins were worth two months’ salary.
Probably in the late sixteenth century the shoe was hidden under the floor of a house. It was the time of the Eighty Years’ War and possibly the owner wanted to save his capital.

Maybe more study of the coins will lead to still more information on the late 16th century.
