The new fake salmon grows twice as fast as the real one, and not even scientists know its long-term health effects. The company that developed the Frankenfish altered the DNA of the salmon to create a fish that would grow at lightning speed, year-round. Not only do we not understand its long term health effects, if a few of them or their eggs reached the wild, these super-salmon could decimate entire wild salmon populations. Worse, once they hit supermarkets, we won’t be able to tell apart Frankenfish and real salmon, so there won’t be a way to avoid it!
The biotech industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying governments to approve its GM crops. Frankenfish is their next million dollar baby — it could open the floodgates for other transgenic meats. But the US government will consider public opinion before it makes its final decision — if we can stun them with a giant global opposition when they least expect it, we can stop this reckless deal.

Many MEPs support the historic deal that would end overfishing. But a group of countries in bed with powerful fishing interests — led by France and Spain — are bullying ‘undecided’ MEPs to vote no or abstain. If we build a huge wave of public support now, we can convince parliamentarians to ensure science, not greed, determines the fate of our fish.

Overfishing has already wiped out 90% of the world’s large predatory fish like tuna, sharks and cod. Europe’s fishing policy has been a colossal failure and has contributed to the collapse — 88% of Europe’s seas are overexploited, so monster boats must venture ever further to plunder the seas from Africa to the Pacific.
The stakes are high. Changing EU’s policy from one based on ministers haggling for national quotas to one based on science and long-term sustainability could start rebuilding healthy oceans everywhere. Yet not only are MEPs from France and Spain scheming to gut this deal, the vote could be buried in a sea of other proposals and some MEPs might abstain simply because they’re unaware of the issue. But experts say our voices count! A tidal wave of public support to key MEPs is exactly what we need to save our fish.

Dear Activist,
Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, I love a good piece of salmon. There’s nothing better than walking into my mom’s house and smelling her special salmon recipe baking in the oven.
But when I come home for the holidays this year, it could be one of the last times I can count on that salmon being natural and artificial hormone-free.
Right now, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is deciding whether to allow genetically modified (GMO) salmon to enter our food supply. If approved, these “frankenfish” could pose serious risks to our health, our ecosystems, and our wild salmon stocks.
Tell the FDA to keep GMO Salmon out of our grocery stores and our food supply!
They call them frankenfish for a reason.
The company that makes them — AquaBounty — is taking Atlantic salmon and splicing them with genes from an eel pout and growth hormone from a Chinook salmon. The result is a salmon that produces growth hormone year-round and grows twice as fast.
They have not been proven safe for us to eat, but they have been shown to be less healthy than other salmon — producing less of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than non-GMO salmon. If we don’t speak out now, the FDA may use one flawed study to approve this fish.
And the worst part is that you won’t be able to shop around the problem. Since we still don’t have GMO labeling in most states, when you go to the grocery store, you won’t be able to tell the difference between these frankenfish and other salmon.
Senators like Oregon’s Jeff Merkley and Alaska’s Mark Begich have been leading the charge to ban these frankenfish. We hope you’ll join them in speaking out now.
The good news is that we have a lot of environmental champions in the Senate who will stand up against this terrible bill. But as I write this, I’m sure that the natural gas and oil companies are sending all their high-paid lobbyists to Capitol Hill to try to get this pushed through.

One other huge concern is the threat these frankenfish could pose to our wild salmon if they got out of their farms. The GMO salmon consume five times more food than wild salmon, and are more aggressive. Introducing these traits into the wild population could be devastating.
AquaBounty says that these salmon have been engineered so that they wouldn’t reproduce if they did escape. But you’ve seen Jurassic Park right? As Jeff Goldblum’s character put it, “Life finds a way.”
I’m not willing to risk the future of our wild salmon population on the promises of one company. Are you?
