Bahrain Witnesses: Activist Hurt by Gas Canister
MANAMA, Bahrain June 28, 2012
Witnesses say Bahraini police injured a prominent human rights activist by shooting her in the leg with a tear gas canister.
Rights activist Yousef Al-Muhafedha said Thursday that he saw police fire the canister directly at Zainab al-Khawaja at close range shortly after a protest the previous day in the village of Buri, southwest of the capital Manama. He said they appeared to recognize her.
The injury did not appear life-threatening.
Khawaja is the daughter of jailed activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja. She couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
