Afghan Senator Says GIs Tossed Grenade

June 11, 2009

An Afghan senator heading an investigation into a grenade blast that killed three Afghan civilians charged Wednesday that U.S. troops had thrown the weapon.

The U.S. military denied the allegation and released a video it said showed troops were not responsible for the blast in the northeastern town of Asadabad on Tuesday.

The explosion was in a crowd that had gathered around a military convoy that had become stuck on a road. The death toll rose to three overnight and about 58 Afghans were wounded, hospital doctor Ihsanullah Fazli told AFP. …

Senator Saleh Mohammad, the head of the investigation team appointed by Kabul, said he had seen the video but “couldn’t believe it”.

“I went to the hospital, I spoke to the wounded, I went to the site and spoke to the witnesses and now can say that the bomb was not thrown by the opposition but it was thrown by American forces,” he said.

Confirmed Wednesday as Obama’s new commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal has been given extraordinary powers to assemble his own staff and is drawing heavily from a super-secret assassination squad formed under the Bush administration: here.
