Free speech in the USA, the Bush-McCain way

This video from the USA is called John McCain kicks librarian out of town hall event.

From Peek blog in the USA:

Woman Arrested at McCain Event for “McCain=Bush” Sign

Posted by Lindsay Beyerstein, Majikthise at 5:46 PM on July 7, 2008.

61-year-old librarian single-handedly proves that McCain=Bush.

A 61-year-old librarian was ejected from an ostensibly public McCain campaign event at the Denver Center of Performing Arts in Denver, CO on June 7 because she was brandishing a deadly memetic weapon: a hand-lettered sign that read “McCain=Bush.”

Carol Kreck was standing outside the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, which is located on city property. When she was asked to either discard the sign or get out, Ms. Kreck objected that she was standing on city property. She was lead away by police officers and subsequently ticketed for trespassing. As she was being removed, Kreck asked if was being arrested. The officer answered, “Yes.” (Approximately 1:03 into the video.)

Carol Kreck, QED. McCain=Bush.

As ThinkProgress notes: “McCain has apparently taken a page from the Bush playbook. In 2005, the White House had three activists expelled from a Denver public forum with President Bush because it was the administration’s policy “to exclude potentially disruptive guests from Bush’s appearances nationwide.””

Though John McCain voted for the George W. Bush administration 95 times out of 100, now he apparently dislikes to be compared to Bush.

Bush-McCain hug

Like any other individual, John McCain is entitled to his likes and dislikes, a bit strange as they may be in this case.

However, those likes and dislikes should not have any influence on police behaviour, and should not curtail free speech on public property outside a public meeting.

    Defeat the Wiretap Bill

The Senate will cast its final vote on warrantless wiretapping late Tuesday or Wednesday, so we need to flood Congress with petitions and calls demanding a no vote on the FISA bill.

Call your Senators through the switchboard at 202-224-3121 or dial direct
    http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm
or let BlueAmerica connect you for free:

Join a Facebook group for your state to lobby your Senators:

Last week, thousands of Barack Obama’s supporters urged him to oppose the FISA bill. Obama finally responded with a blog post that was wrong on the key issues. In his post Obama wrote, “I’m certainly not perfect, and expect to be held accountable too.” We’re doing just that through our new Obama Progressive Escrow Fund, to which 550 of you have pledged $83,821 so far.

If you support Obama (as we do) and plan to contribute, consider an informal “pledge” to our escrow fund until Obama demonstrates leadership on the progressive issues you care about most:

    Arrest Karl Rove

The House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed Karl Rove to testify on July 10, but on July 1 Rove announced he would defy the subpoena.

Could you or I get away with defying a Congressional subpoena? Of course not. So why can Karl Rove? Like George Bush and Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, believes he is simply above the law.

It’s time for Congress to prove them wrong by using its power of “inherent contempt” to send the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest Karl Rove (as imagined in photoshop at left) and bring him before the full House to answer to the charge of Contempt of Congress, and to punish him to the maximum extent allowed by law, including prison.

Before Democrats won Congress in 2006, Nancy Pelosi said the most important reason to put Democrats in control of Congress was “subpoena power.” But now Pelosi is quietly blocking the use of inherent contempt.

Elect Regina Thomas to Replace BushDemocrat John Barrow

Together we raised over $25,000 for our first endorsed candidate, State Senator Regina Thomas in her primary against “Bush Democrat” John Barrow. The primary in GA12 is just 1 week away.

Thomas was overjoyed by your generosity, and she is using every penny for her final ad blitz on TV, radio, billboards, and newspapers.

Barrow has over $1 million, so Thomas is definitely the underdog. If you know any voters in her district (roughly Savannah-Augusta-Vidalia – click below to see the map), urge them to vote for Thomas!

10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don’t):

    1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in
honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has
“evolved,” yet he’s continued to oppose key civil rights laws.

    2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on
Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says
McCain “will make Cheney look like Gandhi.”

    3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain
voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded
President Bush for vetoing that ban.

    4. McCain opposes a woman’s right to choose. He said, “I do not
support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned.”

    5. The Children’s Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in
Congress for children. He voted against the children’s health care
bill last year, then defended Bush’s veto of the bill.

    6. He’s one of the richest people in a Senate filled with
millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at
least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing
crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a “second job” and
    skip their vacations.

    7. Many of McCain’s fellow Republican senators say he’s too reckless
to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: “The thought
of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He’s
erratic. He’s hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”

    8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his
campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The
government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59
lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other
    presidential candidates.

    9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in
recent years. The pastor McCain calls his “spiritual guide,” Rod
Parsley, believes America’s founding mission is to destroy Islam,
which he calls a “false religion.” McCain sought the political
support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane
Katrina was God’s punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic
Church “the Antichrist” and a “false cult.”

    10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0-yes,
zero-from the League of Conservation Voters last year.

Bush’s Record on Terror:Billions Spent, Thousands Dead, al Qaeda Str

A reporter admits that it was Karl Rove who betrayed the CIA by outing
an operative. Said Rove, “I’ve already said too much”. Incredibly, Bush
allowed this traitor to continue working at the White House during a
time of war. Also, the president’s false words make clear the failures
of Bush’s terrorism strategy, given a US government report that after
billions spent and thousands dead, al Qaeda is “considerably …
    stronger”.

  3. Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has become much too friendly with Pastor John Hagee, the same man who preached that Hitler was only doing God’s bidding.

Tell Sen. Lieberman to immediately withdraw his commitment to deliver the keynote address at Hagee’s Israel Summit on July 22.

    Bob Fertik

    Dear Activist,

Tell Sen. Lieberman: Don’t speak at John Hagee’s conference next week. Click here.

Next week, Senator Joe Lieberman will be a featured speaker and honored guest of Pastor John Hagee. This is same preacher that said God sent Hitler. That’s just wrong – and we have to say so.

Sign on to our ‘Don’t Go, Joe’ petition to demand Lieberman cancel his appearance at Hagee’s conference.

After Senator McCain renounced Hagee’s endorsement in May, Lieberman should have immediately followed suit. But the ties between the two men still run much too deep.

Lieberman has called Hagee a “man of God,” even though Hagee has called the Catholic Church a “great whore,” blamed Hurricane Katrina on the gay community of New Orleans and said that “all Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews.”

When Sen. Lieberman is challenged on his support for Pastor Hagee, he points to Hagee’s pro-Israel record. So, let’s take a look at Hagee’s record on Israel.

    * Hagee and his group want war with Iran. War with Iran is a terrible idea, for both America and Israel. Instead, we need a tough new American diplomatic effort to engage Iran on its nuclear program and its funding of extremist groups. Military force must be only a last resort.
    * Hagee and his group support Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank financially and politically. Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank is a major impediment to a two-state solution to the conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis.
    * Hagee and his group believe in an “Armageddon” prophecy with Jews at the center. They believe that before the Second Coming of Jesus, Jews will return to Israel for a final confrontation with Iran, which will cause all the Arab nations to unite under Russia’s leadership, and lead to an “inferno [that] will explode across the Middle East, plunging the world toward Armageddon.”

As hard as it is to believe some of this stuff, it’s true. And it’s shocking that Senator Joe Lieberman would go anywhere near it.

Join with CREDO Action and J Street and sign on to our “Don’t Go, Joe!” petition today.

It’s hugely important that we fight back against Lieberman and Hagee’s approach to foreign policy in the Middle East. That’s why we’re asking you to speak up now, and tell Joe Lieberman not to speak at Hagee’s conference on July 22nd. Just click on the link above to sign on.

    Thanks.
