Thousands of Greek ‘NO’ voters continue celebrations into the night at a central square in Athens.
After blackmail and a coup against democracy in Greece by the European Union-International Monetary Fund fanatics, Prime Minister Tsipras railroaded draconian austerity and privatisation measures through parliament; against many of his own Syriza party’s MPs, and supported by the previous government parties, defeated in the January elections. Measures which Tsipras himself believes that will harm, not benefit the Greek people. They will benefit mainly a few German and other billionaires profiting from fire sales of Greek public property.
“The hard truth is this one-way street for Greece was imposed on us,” Tsipras said. The lenders had sent the message that in a country under a bailout there was no point in holding elections, he said.

SYRIZA Left Platform Announces New Party ‘Popular Unity’

After the resignation of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his government and the decision for snap elections in Greece, the SYRIZA Left Platform announced the formation of a new leftist party.
Reportedly, the new party will be called “Popular Unity” as 25 SYRIZA lawmakers broke away and became independent. The party will be headed by former Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis.
The party’s hard leftists issued an announcement immediately after Tsipras’ resignation speech and the call for elections, in which they stated that the Left Platform will form a “wide, anti-memorandum, progressive democratic front that will go to the elections with the agenda to cancel all memoranda.”
The Left Platform also accused Tsipras for showing a new face in complete contrast with all the SYRIZA pledges and struggles.
According to the announcement, Tsipras signed a new austerity memorandum contrary to the people’s will and in absentia of SYRIZA and its members.
“The snap elections Alexis Tsipras decided, will be held in order to bury the proud “no” of the referendum. To bury the anti-memorandum struggles and anti-memorandum expectations of the people… Greek people are asked to put a noose around their necks and approve a new memorandum,” the statement said.
“The Left Platform, faithful to the SYRIZA commitments, consistent with the “no” of the Greek people, carries the flag of the struggle to get out of the crisis, for productive reconstruction and progress… The Left Platform will immediately form a wide, anti-memorandum, progressive democratic front that will go to the elections with the agenda to cancel all memoranda. To move toward the write-off of the biggest part of the debt… To cancel austerity in wages, pensions and social spending. To stop the sellout of Greece’s state property. To put the country on a new path of national independence, sovereignty, recovery and a new progressive course,” the statement concluded.
It is expected that the new party will be endorsed by a personality of great caliber such as Mikis Theodorakis or Manolis Glezos. Parliament President Zoe Konstantopoulou is certain to follow the “Popular Unity.” On the contrary, former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis will most likely not join the new party. When reporters told SYRIZA MP Costas Lapavitsas that reports say Varoufakis will not be in the new Left Platform party, Lapavitsas answered, “Sometimes reports are accurate.”
Greece’s pre-election campaign has turned ugly before it has even officially commenced, with senior figures – including the former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis – rounding on the prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, for his governance of the crisis-plagued country. Breaking the wary truce since his surprise resignation the day after Greeks voted to reject austerity in a referendum last month, Varoufakis has lashed out at the leftwing leader’s policy choices, saying in an interview in the New Review that Tsipras had decided “to surrender” to the punitive demands of international creditors keeping Athens afloat. Instead of remaining faithful to the anti-austerity platform on which his radical left Syriza party had been elected, the young prime minister had allowed his ego to get the better of him and made a conscious decision to become the “new De Gaulle, or Mitterrand more likely”: here.

SOCIALIST sensation Yanis Varoufakis will rock the stage at a series of campaign meetings this month, the Morning Star can reveal.
The former Greek finance minister, famed for his leather jackets, motorbikes and no-nonsense confrontations with the international establishment, is set to address delegates and members of the public at TUC Congress next Sunday.
He will also address a People’s Assembly meeting on the doorstep of the Tory government in Westminster.
At the TUC fringe meeting in Brighton Mr Varoufakis, who has become a critic of Greece’s Syriza government since his resignation in July, will join Labour MP John McDonnell and PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka.
Mr Serwotka, whose union is hosting the rally, said he was “delighted” to be hosting Mr Varoufakis.
“He is an outstanding economist and has been at the forefront of challenging the necessity for and the politics of austerity, not only in Greece but across Europe,” the union leader added.
Other speakers at the London meeting are expected to be confirmed shortly.
People’s Assembly national secretary Sam Fairbairn said: “Under a Tory government, the UK is falling deeper and deeper into a humanitarian and financial crisis.
“Yanis Varoufakis, who was brave enough to take on international governments and the troika, will be a very exciting addition to our panel.”

Platform of Popular Unity, Greece

We call to lend full to Popular Unity (PU) which represents the consequent continuation of the NO of the Greek people imposed by the EU oligarchy led by Berlin.
They call for a large popular front to cancel the bailout’s starvation conditions, to stop serving debt and to nationalize the bank system.
PU clearly states that this implies the rupture with the Euro regime and to issue a new national currency. All this will require a thorough break with the elites backed by the mobilized and organised masses. One aspect of that transformation is a constituent assembly moving from the neo-liberal dictates of EU capitalist rulers to active popular democracy.
An electoral success of PU will give a tremendous push to the anti-systemic forces across Europe. It can be regarded as the political fruits of fives years of resistance by the Greece popular classes.

In this initiative there will be no room for monolithic logics and pretensions to exclusive truth. A variety of social sensitivities, political traditions, and ideological preferences will have their place. It is a prerequisite for survival of this front that its functioning be democratic, centered on the activists themselves, their demands, and the answers they submit.
Nationalization of the banks and their operation under a regime of social control, with watertight guarantees for the savings of ordinary people. The new nationalized banking system, freed from the patronage of the European Central Bank (ECB), will underwrite the vitally necessary cancellation of debt for households exhausted by the crisis and the equally necessary liquidity for small and medium businesses threatened with closure.
What will be needed are policies of democratic central and regional planning, with participation and joint decision-making from local communities and a distinct environmental dimension.
The question of an exit from the eurozone and of a break with the neoliberal policies and choices of the EU, which has been following an ever more reactionary and anti-democratic trajectory, will be placed on the agenda not as the product of some ideological obsession but in terms of basic political realism.
Whatever the inevitable difficulties of the first months, nothing justifies the stance of those Cassandras who equate such a move with economic disaster and national ruin. In the course of the twentieth century, sixty-nine monetary unions collapsed on this planet without this signifying the end of the world. The introduction of a national currency as a prerequisite for implementation of a progressive program for reconstruction and a way forward is not only a viable option; it is an option of hope, with the potential to launch the country on a new developmental trajectory.
We are against the new “Cold War” and a new division of Europe with the erection of new walls against Russia. We oppose the imperialistic options and the military adventurism of NATO. We are pledged to the exit of Greece from this coalition, a war machine that disintegrates states, tyrannizes peoples, and destabilizes the wider geopolitical arc of our region from eastern Ukraine to the Middle East. We campaign for the removal of the American-NATO bases, for non-participation of Greece in any imperialist organization.
We will moreover launch wide-ranging social consultation for in-depth revision of the Constitution and the political system by a new constituent assembly to emerge from subsequent elections.
For us the claim to governmental power is not an end in itself. It is subordinated to a more general goal of claiming political power for a broader people’s alliance. It serves a program of immediate exit from today’s impasse, one that can be imposed by a government supported by the power of the organized people and their own specific institutions, in the workers movement, the youth movement, local and environmental movements, movements of solidarity, forms of popular self-organization.
