Violence as protest calls for Britain out of Cyprus
Tuesday 03 January 2012
Police clashed with Cyriots rallying outside the British Akrotiri airbase near Limassol on Monday and arrested two of them.
The demonstrators demanded that Britain shut both its Akrotiri base and one at Dhekelia, west of Larnaca – facilities that it kept after Cyprus won independence in 1960.
Scuffles took place when security guards and police tried to break up the rally, with some protesters throwing stones.
Four police officers and one journalist were hurt.
The bases were used heavily by Britain during its bombing campaign to support rebels overthrow the Libyan government, and they also help funnel supplies to occupation forces in Afghanistan.
British Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said last month that the coalition plans to hang on to the “sovereign base areas in a region of geo-political importance and high priority for the United Kingdom’s long-term national security interests.”
Militia fighting in Tripoli kills five
LIBYA: Two paramilitary groups clashed in the centre of Tripoli today with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns.
Five fighters were killed, according to the so-called Tripoli military council.
It was not immediately clear why the two groups fought.
Witnesses say gunmen from Misrata tried to storm a building used by the military council in an attempt to free prisoners.
The military council is affiliated with the Western-backed government.
